Default Any ideas what a custom made front door should/will cost?

I have what looks to be an original frame (approx 130 year old) but some *** has replaced the original door with an aluminium frame and door in the space.

The opening is approx 39 inch by 7 foot tall. it's big.

I'm after a wooden door to replace the aluminium nastiness, with a couple of windows in.

Any ideas what I'll be looking at? And if anyone can recommend somewhere in Beds/Herts that's would also be great.

It all depends on the material, what do you want it made of? Any windows in it?

If I were you I think I would be looking for a reclaimed door of the correct era for the house. Price wise would probably work out cheaper than having a bespoke one made. Just my thoughts.

I've had a quick look, and will start ringing around after New Year. But the size seems to be larger than most, so I was weighing up other options.

But I agree a reclaimed door would be the best solution.

Lovely door.

Ok that's quite a bit of money, but I bet there's some work that goes into it.

I took 2 months to build in total,a local guy who builds doors and window frames for old country houses and rural homes did it..

It had 60 coats of protection and oil...

I did have a search around before i got this chaps number,as he doesnt advertise... And the price he gave me was in the middle of the 5 quotes i had.

I have been very happy with it,it looks as good now as the day it went on,10 mins maintenance every few months is all it takes.
He did have to come back in the first winter as the door had "grown" slightly... You can get this even with seasoned wood...only 2 minutes of rubbing and retreating had it sorted.

A custom made door and frame always will be, if the price scares you get a softwood door frame which will reduce the costs, Its very doubtful the original house would of had a hardwood frame,

If your looking to save on cost then go to wickes or howdens and get a door and frame and pack the gap from the original opening to the new frame with timer or expanding foam then just cover the packed area on the sides and top with nice strips of softwood or even better hardwood. Price for this door and frame would be between £200 - £600 depending on style and grade of timber etc.

If you want one made to measure then theres surely some joiners workshops in your area you can get some quotes from. This would surely be more expensive than above on comparison of styles , timber etc.
