I have to agree with Neil, it's not like the main house is of significant architectural merit. Not sure where you got this picture but your point can surely be made more clearly with a better example.

I saw a worse one looking at a house last year, with grey brick used on a red brick house. The extension brickwork wasn't even joined up/tied in properly.

It's this house.

From the front it is better than average looking.

Looks like it "needs work".
As for the brick matching, the building control bods would normally expect you to get a close match but it's rarely ever going to be exactly the same and will look better over time as it weathers in.

I'm just thinking how someone goes about building that? I mean do they have a plan and drawings or just go for it; i.e mark out the rough shape in the dirt, stack some bricks on top of each other, throw on a flat roof?

My pet extension hate is that they 'step in' the extension wall - there's probably a very good reason why they do it - but it just looks wrong - it would be better to have a smooth faced wall and key on the bricks surely?
And the step down on the roof to match

They did that to my parents old house (after it was sold due to teh divorce); I remember my dad being livid as he built it and knew the make and type of brick and it was still available. So there was just no need for it. It was a nice house in a nice area; not a mass produced Mucklow/Barrets affair
I will have an issue once I get my extension build underway (in place of a wood framed conservatory), as the bricks for my current house are a limited run. What I'll have to do is reuse the bricks used for the base of the conservatory (luckily the interior walls of the conservatory are the same brick as the external ones), probably as pillars, and infill the walls inbetween the pillars as recessed sections in a contrasting brick...the same was done to external garage, so it should be in keeping with the architecture.
So I am mindful of it at least, so its not about cutting corners, if anything its going to cost a few grand extra.
Roof is standard Marley tiles though...thankfully

My pet hate is why are we still building houses that look the same as they did years ago?
Mainly 1930's clones or mock Georgian.Boring, boring, boring!!
Everything else has moved forward yet the most important & expensive part of our lives is totally uninspiring.
Appalling lack of imagination.

It's not that bad, although the net curtains look awful. About the brick show, he can get away from all the criticism by painting his house exterior in one colour. Then you wouldn't know which brick is which.
