Question

This is a serious thred so no p1ss taking please

I wondered if anyone on here has any expert knowledge on hairloss of the beard!!!!
It started on the left hand side under my chin and I noticed a small spot about the size of a 5p had stopped growing, over the last year this had grown to 50p size!!! my Dr says its facial alopecia !?, a few small soft baby hairs have returned, but the bald area is getting bigger slowly.

Am I likely to loss it all, my goatee is now in serious danger
Will it spread to my head??, is it something else??

I had throat cancer 5 years ago and have spoken to my specialist and he says this is not a sign the cancer has / is going to return, I have had a CT scan, Barium meal and ultrasound in the last 8 months on my throat all of which proved to show no problems, apart from acid reflux which is now being treated sucessfully.

Any inside info is appreciated.

Thanks

Dave (anyone got a balding gif )

Similar note...

Why can't I grow a beard? I'm 25 and only get a bit of stubble accross mi top lip and on mi chin! I don't want a beard but I'd much prefer the full lot or non at all!

A mate has the same beard problem.. patches of no hair.

He just shaves like 99% of us...

It is not related to hair loss elsewhere and therefore no indication that you will lose your hair.

He just looks a little strange with stubble... so shaves everyday.

Bob - It would be nice to not have to shave at all wouldn't it.
I think you will find that you can encourage the rest of the hairs to grow and thicken up by shaving all over rather than just where you need to. As by cutting the hair you encourage it to grow..
A bladed wet shave would probably be best as you will get a closer shave and cut the very short hair etc..

I am no doctor just my opinion and what I have learned from my mate who has had the problem for years.

Funkii, Sometimes this just happens anyway and sometimes it just corrects itself and sometimes not. if you have private medical insurance why not see a specialist (even just to talk things over), particulary with respect to previous medical hsitory which may have an influence (or may not) in terms of the treatment that your received.

Mark - i like your style

JGM2 - I have always only shaved 2 times a week stubble for 3 days, after 16 years my face is used to the routine, if I shave before the 3 days are up I get a rash!! anyway i like my stubble and so does the missus

BobT you have my sympathy

Dr Lurve - what about this new hair restoring drug it may cover my solar panel but would it do the same thing for my stubble?? i cant remember the name its been in the press recently.

Michelle - Thank you for taking the time to do the search.your too kind.

Dave

Funkii, there is a drug called Rogaine (common place) it is not very good as it the hair that regrows is very fluffy and sometimes not approrpiate looking. For Rogain the hair regrows where ever you rub it in. Years ago I was working in the lab where that was discovered, since the lab workers noticed fluffy hair growing on their hands. The other one Propecia is much better and is effective for treating male pattern baldness (not too sure whether it would change your facial 50p, as it works by altering the action of testerone at hair follicles in the scalp), bear in mind that I work for the company that makes the second one (but that is my honest opinion as a unbiased scientist).

Dr Lurve

One of my colleagues at work is seriously considering taking propecia as he has a big solar panel on the top of his head, not completely bald but very thinning. when you use the term pattern baldness, what specifically is "pattern".

Also as you work for the co that produces propecia is it true that it will take 6 months before any noticeable sign of re growth will arrive??, and lastly he is on 25mg (a day) of beta blockers for highish blood pressure, would this stop him being able to take propecia, he's a bit shy ah!!, do your company have a website with more info.

Cheers Doc

Funkii, its all here for you http://www.merck.com/product/usa/propecia/cns/home.html
should not be a prob for your mate with hypertension/beta blockers but he should always consult his doctor. Yes it could take up to 6 months to work.

good luck, Jen.
