Default Sky vs. Freesat

Moving into a new pad next week and intend on doing one or the other. I haven't bothered with either for the past year as I just couldn't be bothered with it and buried my head in books for a while but the question is,

Is a freesat HDR worth paying £240 for? when that would pay almost a years worth of Sky TV?

I like the idea of a one off payment and that being it but I do enjoy the discovery channels etc.

The freesat box would sensibly be written off over a much longer period than one year. You may choose not to have a recording/pause live TV type box if you have catch up TV services. Also consider youview or any deal where a supplier can give you multiple services, these aren't cheaper for me as I like to live in the sticks where lack of LLU means that the offers don't apply.

I have just taken a six month NowTV package for £2.50 a month which is basically Sky Movies on demand. I can never seem to justify the cost of Sky.

I would go with freesat and then get Lovefilm and Netflix and you will have a much better choice of things to watch and spend less than what Sky would stand you

There was a total film deal with Now TV. It seems that if you take the first month free and then cancel you might get an offer for £4 per month for six months. I certainly won't continue at £15.99 a month but there are much newer films than Love Film and Netflix, so will be interested in what is possible once the deal runs out. Will continue Love Film though as Blu Ray quality is much better.

I have no experience of Freesat but plenty of using Sky.

I know it costs a bit but I find that Sky has an outstanding choice of viewing. I use Sky Sports a lot and their coverage as well as their style is excellent. I don't begrudge the monthly charge.

I think I'll go down the Freesat route, the new Humax box looks pretty good. I like the fact you can stream videos etc to it too which is handy as my Popcorn Hour is very much dying.

I have a Humax Freesat HDR and although its old hat now it is still far superior to the Sky box in terms of searching and replaying. When my free year of Sky ends I won't miss it as all the shows will have been repeated a dozen times by then.

Freesat HDR is the right choice.

I'm considering it, a rather friendly SN'er pointed me in this direction.
