How this barking mad collection of do-gooders are still around I don't know. Their latest wheeze? Don't imprison people for property theft, even repeat offenders! So someone repeatedly nicks your car and get community service? The sooner they are laughed and derided into oblivion the better.

Please please reread the article, in his view violence still requires a custodial sentence

What he seems to be arguing for, rightly or wrongly, is a refocusing of the justice system to the needs of the victim rather than a the "simpler" (as he would undoubtedly see it) solution of banging up the perpetrator
