Default House Security Alarms

Hi All

Having been recently burgled while on Holiday. As late as it is I am now looking at an alarm. Has anyone got any input for this at all. Not sure I am keen on the wireless idea to be honest.

Thanks in advance

Can't help you with your location.
But I went to my local police station for advice, they gave me some local accredited firms.
I did some homework then and chose my installer.

Me and my sister have the same one. Been excellent.
1. Wired is better, and get it fitted professionally.
2 . Forget door sensors, all you need is a motion sensor aimed at each entry point. We have four in total, covering both doors and living room and dining room windows. Nothing else needed. Wired in so no batteries. Panel with four digit code in hall.

12years old, not a single problem.

With wired jobs you should have 2 batterys one in the control panel and one in the outside bell

I agree wired is better but some job its nearly impossible to hide wires so we normally fit Visonic wirelees alarms a good bit of kit.

alarms are deterents not direct measures of preventing burglaries. Nowadays even with an alarm burglars have those vital minutes to get in and get what they want or moreso what they can carry (jewelry, money, cameras, iphones etc).
Not disputing that alarms are great ideas, especially those that have a loud sirens and call a mobile phone from a land line when the alarm goes off that is useful but theres no gurantee it would stop a burglar breaking in but it is a good deterent.

I have a Gartec cost £600 supply and fit with 7 motion detection zones and front door sensor

Forget the poxy alarms... wire in air raid sirens. We have 3.... 1 on the farm, 1 on the front of the house, and 1 on the back. Also wired in are about 10 500w flood lights. Plus a whole bunch of other security measures.

Yes wired is better.
Motion sensor is no use if you have cats/dogs in the house - especially cats.
I have both - door sensors to set the alarm when cat is in, motion sensor covers other areas of the house not protected by door sensors.

My alarm is covered by maintenance policy - they replaced the batteries last last year too under the maintenance agreement.

Very much depends on the quality of the kit.

I have a Visonic alarm. No wires, but constantly changes frequency so can't be blocked, keyfob activated, pet friendly motion directors, door contacts, integrated fire alarm, video recording if alarm is tripped and monitored 24/7

Very good piece of kit.

My one bit of advice would be if you go for a monitored alarm (and you should if possible) make sure you own the kit - not hire it!!!!

Good quality wireless, yes. I personally wouldn't go for wired or a cheap wireless system. Check out Visonic alarms

Have you ever been broken into?

I suspect not, and the upheaval and grief it brings is not very nice.

Then you've got to deal with your insurance company, who I can tell you, will try their very best to shaft you even further and avoid paying out on as much as possible.

Alarms at the end of the day only keeps the honest man out, however that flashing box on the side of your house is a pretty good initial deterrent to the opportune thief.
