Car cleaning
Can someone tell me what its called when they use the clay bars etc on your car.
My work car really does look sorry for iteself snd i want to treat it to a full clean. Its a 62 plate with 60k on the clock so it doesnt have paint fade but i feel it needs a little more then just fairy liquid... (joke)

I used to do it as a side thing when I was an apprentice just for some extra cash.
Basically, it depends what you want doing and who you ask - this is important as if you inadvertently called a detailer such as Paul Dalton, you'd have a coronary at his prices...
You can pay anything from £70 to... Well, whatever really, for a full detail but as said, it depends who you ask, upside is there's only a handful of retailers that brand them selves as "supercar specialist detailers".

A basic "detail" would be a snow foam, wash and clay then polish (you need to "seal" the paint once it has been clayed). I can do all that in a couple of hours so it doesn't take too long.
If it's 62 reg it shouldn't need too much work - a good preparation and polish should be enough.
Some really obsessive nutters wet sand and fully detail brand new cars!

I would say you need a basic paint correction detail.
That involves a wash process, contamination removal by hand, then the paint polished with a machine. Followed by protection.
It will take 6 to 8 hours, and cost you between £150 for a random "man in van" but on avearage more like £280-£300 for a known detailer with insurance etc etc.
With the right aftercare the paint correction detail will last a long, long time. Watch how the guy does the clay work, and then you can clay the car yourself and top up the wax every 3 - 4 months.
When I buy a second hand car I tend to get this done and then just keep it looking good myself. The initial cost is quite high, but if you keep the car for 3 years its well worth doing. Even on new-ish cars.
Your other option is to buy a PC and try and learn DIY - but I have never been brave enough...

I'm into detailing and do every stage apart from the machine polishing. Twice a year I wash my car, tar remover, iron-x, clay, prime, and 3 layers of sealant protection... that's just the bodywork. I also take off the wheels and give them a total clean and seal with poorboys sealant, plus wheel arches and callipers. Then there's a full clean of the engine bay, interior, leathers, windows and rubber seals. All that takes an entire day but when I give it it's basic weekly clean it's very quick and easy to keep the protection topped up.
If I added in the machine polishing, that would be half a day extra added on top. None of it is difficult and I could probably do the machine polishing with a dual action polisher but haven't got round to buying one yet.

I got banned from DW. There's some very odd folk on it who have proper OCD. I just couldn't resist ripping the pi55...
It was useful at times though and got me a few samples to trial and review.

Twice a year the local fire station have a charity car wash, I usually take it there
The GT86 gets washed by me a bit more regularly though.
