I would bet TG makes the BBC a damn sight more than that in income!

Ridiculous. I used to like him, but when it got to the 5th series that's when I disliked him. Now I ******* hate him.

This is outrageous, this country is deep in the midst of austerity, benefits being capped, bankers bonuses being capped, pay freezes and job cuts and modest pay rises for hard working ministers and the government telling everyone to tighten their belts and accept cutbacks etc etc. How can the BBC justify handing out £30m of our hard earned licence fees just so three geriatric c*nuts can go round driving flash cars.

Because of the unique way it's funded....... through taxation

He's been pretty clever imo, setting up the Bedder 6 company n then reaping the share awards from a previous buyout of said company and from the shares he currently owns.

His salary is "only" £1m. Compared to say a pro footballer, its loose change considering the revenue TG makes globally for the BBC.

As some have said, only £1m is from license fees.

dont forget he is taxed on his income and by still living in the UK he isnt worming out of it like many high paid stars,
He gets paid £1 million a year by the BBC, the rest is from shares like many of us have,
He was savvy and it paid off, suck it up and move on.

The BBC didn't pay him that. It's dividends from the company he partly ownes. Plus I think it's £14m not £30m.

TG is sold throughout the world and brings in a lot of income. Why shouldn't he be rewarded?

Here's a thought. Become sucessful in something that gets sold around the world. It earns Millions of pounds each year. But DON'T reward yourself. See how you get on with that.

I thought rules had changed and that now people had to be employed directly rather than through their own company

Don't they call themselves "freelance Journalists" which would mean they are self employed but under contract? JC writes for TG magazine, his own books and also articles in newspapers.

Tom Ford presents 5th Gear but he's also a writer for Top Gear Magazine.

With a bit of luck he might go away and do something else now.

Chris Evans, Graham Norton and a number of others own the production companies that make the programmes.

The Beeb out sourced the majority oftheir production years ago.
