Driveway gates, wood, any tips, where to get made?
Need some wooden gates made for a 3 metre gap between the house and garage. For privacy. Any tips. Will be 6ft high, two gates, both opening. Had one quote £800 fitted.

Wood? hellish heavy, difficult to hang and not have them sag, then if they do, difficult to open and close, plus maintenance.
Thought about steel posts and wrought-iron gates, with some privacy fencing on each gate?

I built my own - I made a frame from steel box section and clad it with wood....This gave the rigidity of a steel gate and meant I could use much lighter wood, which cost less and was much less of a ball-ache. It wont sag or twist and they have been great.

I bought a pair from Atkinsons - they have a few branches so might have 1 near you?
We had a joiner fit ours using adjustable hinges so when they do move it's easy to adjust a nut on the hing to re-align, i think the movement is down to the posts which should have been done in brick not wooden ones

I've used Cannock Gates a couple of times. Softwood, but treated well before hanging and re-treated with a quality sealant every couple of years they should be fine. I had some 6'x8' gates and the posts sagged, so I just braced the top of the posts with a steel bar. It was only visible when they were open, and at 6' up was no hinderence for cars, although I clouted my head a couple of times. Just fitted a 3m field gate to my current driveway, but hinged it to the house wall, so no posts needed. You'd probably need 6" or 8" oak posts to carry solid wooden gates, and well set in too.
