i would expect possible ruptured ear drums being that close. been tryign to figure out how far away there sat in that vid, looks like about 100-200m's the far side of the playing field next to the school, although google is not very up to date.

From the sounds of it firefighters have died. Brave men as usual. However, a fire at a fertilizer factory with tanks full of ammonium nitrate shouldn't you just get everyone as far away as possible, including firefighters?

wasn't enevatable or they would have fully evacuated and just let it blow, latest reports seem to say was a fire with fire fighters trying to put it out. Suposedly the water came into contact with a chemical it shouldn't have and it blew.

This morning's news said it was an ammonia tank that blew. You could see it burning, yet ammonia isn't flammable.
I used to work at a chemical plant that produced fertiliser as a by-product. One of the reactors we had contained ammonium nitrITE, under pressure and at fairly high temperature. It was very unstable, and had to be sampled and analysed every 30 minutes.
The sample number, when it came in, was: R101.........
The name of the plant, (for those that remember)? Nypro.

That would be 'Flixbourough' ? -- remember seeing it on telly in the 70's. Was it one of the biggest ever in this country..?

Working in a chemicals plant on a refinery and seeing videos like this scares the crap out of me. When you see the blast zones for blevys its a worrying thought.
My thoughts go out to those involved

It's what we in the industry call a BLEVE, a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion caused by a pressurised vessel exceeding it's boiling point then rupturing releasing it's normally highly explosive contents which will rapidly ignite whilst expanding.
It's was always a worry when we were welding on the LNG tanks in Pembroke as they held around 46,000 ton of liquified natural gas.
