I have a friend who is an artist, and you could have a look around his site to see if anything tickles you. He doesn't, yet, have the ability to purchase originals or prints setup on his website, but you could always contact him and ask. Shipping might be interesting as he's in Canada.

Must admit to having a few spare walls in my house that need a nice painting or two on but i also find it hard to find weirdy, abstracty paintings which take my fancy.

Your best bet is to always deal with the artist direct. Most of them will be on facebook / google etc.
We had a couple of prints and I really wanted to get a commission done and in the end just searched on google and sent and e-mail and 6 months later had my own painting on the wall.

As billy says, it'll be cheaper to find an artist whom you like their stuff, and commission them to do you a piece rather than buy from a gallery who have their cut.
We've got a couple of pieces from Paresh Nrshinga

http://www.paulkenton.com/ ? I quite fancied one of his for my office.
edit: not one of his originals but a limited edition print.
