Well that was unexpected :(
Just returned from a stunning 3 week break in OZ,
Lots of photo's, hot +40c day,s and a Broken Neck!
2nd Week in, tripped over and did a half assed faceplant running on the beach, and rolled over my head!
One chipped C5, and the disc compressed and partially displaced on C6.
Spent 2 days in hospital and am now in a collar for a futher 4 weeks, before a further reccomended 4 - 6 weeeks in another collar.
Surgery / fusing of the verts is also being mentioned.
Wont forget that one in a hurry lol

At least you were in Aus where the hospitals are top class. If you'd done it here you would probably have died of MRSA posioning by now!
Aside from the obvious what did you think of Australia?

Glad to hear you seem to be OK as far as nerves are concerned? Just shows how easily these things can happen, when you just trip up and end up with a broken neck!

He wouldn't have got treatment in the UK because of all the immigrants and health tourists, thanks to the NHS advert that went global during the Olympics opening ceremony.

Cant really fault the hospital, apart from 24hrs on a trolly lol
One CAT scan, One MRI scan, Enough Tramedo, Paracetamol & Nerve pills to keep me floating for weeks
Will have a look at the MRi results, later, and see what they show

What are the chances of that?
Did you have travel insurance or did you save money by taking advantage of the reciprocal arrangements - coz I'm a bit curious as to how effective this arrangement is.

We had travel insurance, but they have a reciprical agreement with the NHS, so you will get treated, the travel insurance is for repatriation.
IF you have a bells and whistles policy, you can go private, but it depends on the insurance company.
Due to my injury, i was move to business class for the return journey.
The wife and youngest, had to stay in economy though

Yes bit of a shock i'll say.
Now just need to she what they agree over here, definatly not right, as i still have the pain ( albeit subsided) and hypersensitivity in the two hands
Brings home how fragile we really are. A break in the C4,5,6 region is quadraplegic territory

Just thank fùck you never damaged your cord, or even bruised it, or you'd still be in OZ now with calipers in your skull!

A break in the neck full stop is tetraplegic territory (or quadriplegic if you're a yank) assuming you damage the spinal cord. A 'complete' diagnosis, (a severed spinal cord), results in total 4 limb paralysis as opposed to varied partial paralysis in 4 limbs with an 'incomplete' break, (Spinal cord cut but not severed). The lower the C (cervical) number the increase in internal functions being damaged too, not being able to breathe alone etc.

I have a chipped 5th (Classed as unstable lol) but as its at the front, there not worried
I have streched and then compressed the disks in 567 with the result that the disc between 5& 6 is partially displaced, and pressing against the cord
This is what's causing the hypersensitivity. Its much reduced, but still at a level that causes discomfort.
Once the Pregabalin has been consumed, (3 more days) i will see what happens,
At one point they were going to operate there and then, due to the level of hypersensitivity in my hands.
I have been in a Philidelphia collar for the last 2 weeks, with a look to going to a soft collar in another months time for a further 6 weeks after that.

That and the fact i couldnt focus and struggled to keep myself upright gave me a good indicator id done something hefty.
Once the initial pain and dizziness went, it was only the nagging pain in the hands that caused any problems
2 weeks on, and i still have extreme sensitivity on the two index fingers...
off to see the UK quack on weds
