Any mrtg users out there care to hazrad a guess at why after following all the instructions really carefully I get this error:
Malformed UTF-8 character (unexpected non-continuation byte 0x2e, immediately after start byte 0xc7) at /usr/local/mrtg-2/bin/../lib/mrtg2/locales_mrtg.pm line 936.
Malformed UTF-8 character (unexpected non-continuation byte 0x20, immediately after start byte 0xd7) at /usr/local/mrtg-2/bin/../lib/mrtg2/locales_mrtg.pm line 936.
Malformed UTF-8 character (unexpected non-continuation byte 0xea, immediately after start byte 0xc4) at /usr/local/mrtg-2/bin/../lib/mrtg2/locales_mrtg.pm line 1146.

without looking into it too deeply, i would say you are getting an unexpected non-continuation byte 0x2e, immediately after start byte 0xc7, other than that I'm stumped

FOr anyone interested, I found a cure:
edit /etc/sysconfig/il8n
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en"
remove the .UTF-8 from the LANG=" part
