I'm about to order a outboard motor (4.5k) and paying via my HSBC visa debit Card thinking of the worst if it never turned up or they went bust would I get my money back?

Not sure about debit card but credit card you will get your money back

I believe so but I don't feel confident so I keep having to worry about hitting my Mastercard limit again (I clear it monthly by direct debit but with a few big ticket items and building materials it is not enough) as many retailers don't accept American Express.

Debit card is a hit n miss sinario dependant on complaint made.
I'd use credit card tbh is safer and more likely to get money back.

Credit card as you money is protected by the consumer credit act. There are ways of getting your money back with a debit card but it's not as easy or guaranteed.

Definitely don't use BACS.

There is some protection, particularly from VISA debit, but claining can be hard and Ive heard of banks themselves telling people that there isnt any protection when they have come to claim (out of ignorance I believe, not malice).

Better to use a credit card because the Section 75 protection is cast iron.
