Default holiday in rome

i want to take mrs shrek on holiday to rome around august/september time.

i have never been italy so have no idea on what is a good area or a bad area.

can anybody suggest anything? im quite into history/museums etc so would like plenty to go and look at.

ideally no more than £600 for the pair of us (flight and hotel)

cheers

My daughter has only just got back from Rome and she stayed in St. Peter's square.

Italy is achingly beautiful, and Rome is no exception, Been there quite a few times, was there with my wife and Kids last summer

Plenty to see, they do a combined tourist ticket that gets you into the Colosseum, pantheon etc

Rome in August is very very hot btw

And the food is generally very very good

If you haven't already, you could consider hiring a car and also staying in Perugia for a couple of nights as this area in the mountains around the lakes is very pretty. Pisa is perhaps worth a day as a one off.
