Default taxing a car early

i have just bought my mrs a ford ka with tax until end of january 2013 (1 month),the guy didnt have the new keepers supplement slip (i have got an invoice slip from his business so not worried there) what i am worried about is if the logbook doesnt turn up before the end of jan how can we tax it?

could he tax it for us tomorrow without losing the month that is on it already?

i know some log books come in about 2 weeks but it will be my luck that this one does'nt

Yes be carefull as if its not registered in your name they will send he disc to the old owner.

Just tax it at the post office, you fill a form in if you don't have the reg doc or tax reminder.

I made the mistake of taxing a car once using the new keepers supplement and the tax disc went to the previos owner. I had to go into my nearest dvla centre and sort it out there. It's a right ball ache. Good luck

You can do it at the Post Office even if you dont have the V5. I've done it....

You can only tax up to two weeks early.

Why would you need to prove you are the owner? You are giving the DVLA money for a tax disc, they are hardly going to put an obstacle in your way !

TBH I am not sure how it was done, but I bought a car off a friend and he had lost the reg doc, just went to our local post office with insurance, mot and payment and they did it for me.

I wouldn't panic anyway, every car I have bought recently I have had the reg doc within 10 days, they seem pretty quick lately.

Are you saying that you don't have the registration document for the car? If you have you can fill the details in about the new car owner on the document and send it to DVLA. The previous owner can also sign the document to say ownership has been transferred.
