1, when no brackets are used the sum is done in order.

Multiplication has operator precedence over addition therefore the answer is 41!

BODMAS order of operations should be used. Brackets, Orders(sq roots etc), Division/Multiplication, Add/Subtract.
So in that case, it would be

(40x0=0)
then 40+0+1=41

It is 41 and there is no ****ing debate unless you failed maths. If anyone has an A* in maths and disagrees then they just confirm the useless inflation of grades

I totally agree. The nice thing about maths as a subject is that it's not open to opinion, at least not at this level. It's about being absolutely right or wrong... something which seems to have fallen out of fashion these days

40+40=80

80*0=0

+1 =1

yeah...I failed maths

(I read it as (40+40)*0+1 dyscalclia strikes again)

edit; I know its spelt dyscalculia...I'm dyslexic too

I propose that a new marker of deprivation should be the number of years between learning BODMAS and popping your cherry.

Mine is +11. Negative numbers are allowed.

Might be more accurate to label it as a predictor of future deprivation, but exclude individuals with dysclitorrhoea

Got to be honest...I did see it as 81 (40+40 x 0 +1 =81),I didn't know that multiplication becomes before an addition.

Thanks Wikipedia

Worked a treat.

I did see it as 1 until the BODMAS stuff kicked in. I should have got it first time due to my not to distant rekindling with maths on my apprenticeship, so my apologies

Ha, are we ****!

I'll come round, drink your coffee, talk about the nice birds in France, look at some interesting train pics on your computer, delve into my ongoing historical musical education, argue about politics and then discuss another DIY job that's required in the house/car. You know the drill by now!

I'd rather eat veg than do trig functions!

Having spent 3 years of my life manually modeling damped second order systems (system dynamics), I'm inclined to agree

And for what good it did me....I've forgotten it all.

Doesn't matter anyway we have the likes of MathCAD these days

Even if it didn't in what world could the answer be 81?
