Unhappy Gerry Anderson RIP

Gerry Anderson, creator of the Thunderbirds and Joe 90 puppet superhero TV shows, has died at the age of 83.

They are falling like flies .... all these people who I grew up with

Thanks for the memories!

This is sad. I grew up watching Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Stingray, Fireball XL5. Great TV.

I also liked, Supercar, Captain Scarlet, UFO. I could go on all day...........................

I'll start by naming some of his original ideas:

Variable geometry (swing wings)
The ejection pod on fireflash

Both the above appeared on General Dynamics F111 Tactical bomber. Variable geometry appearing on other numerous aircraft such as the F14 Tomcat and the Tornado (MRCA)

It was rumoured that the USAF and aircraft industry as a whole would watch Thunderbirds for ideas.

Then there's the current Rolls-Royce design which to me has been lifted from Lady Penelope's FAB 1

Some are more welcome to this fate than others.
Anyway, Thunderbirds were great and Gerry Andserson an icon.

You just don't understand, as a child i grew up during the space race of the sixties. It was all about watching it all on a little black and white TV with a dodgy flickering picture.

Thunderbirds was part of that for me, even the characters that were the Tracy family were named after the astronauts of the day:

John Glen
Alan Shepard
Scott Carpenter
Gordon Cooper
Virgil (Gus) Grissom

The above were true legends and heros.

I'm only 28 but grew up with the re-runs of those iconic shows. It was seeing things like how the Thunderbirds worked that got me into aesthetical technical illustration and engineering as a whole.

Favourites in order were;

1. Captain Scarlett
2. Thunderbirds
3. Joe 90
4. Stingray
