Swimming
Can you get fit/maintain just by swimming, I'm guessing not. I'm doing a mile once a week, it's quite tedious in a 22.5m pool, about 3/4 of an hour
Just quite cold to be out on the bike/ jogging presently

Have heard people saying swimming is about the best excercise you can do as you use just about every muscle in your body.
Plus you can pee in the pool.

It uses a lot of muscles, and doesn't put strain on any joints
However unless you're going some it certainly doesn't feel as aerobic as jogging, nothing like

True, but the whole body tends to feel it more afterwards, and I know I sleep like a log after a good swim as well so aerobic or not it does the trick.

I do lots of running, cycling and weight training and just to see I did a 32 length session in the pool a few weeks back (half a mile iirc). I didn't feel tired like I do after say a 10-12 mile run but I had a proper sweat-on when I got out of the pool.

Depends whether you swim like most women, kind of float, side by side chatting then stop for ten minutes.
I used to swim quite a bit, good exercise but boring as hell, why I love cycling is it saves me fuel, I get some exercise and even though it takes longer than using the car it saves time as I dont have to find as much time for other exercise or pay for the gym, amazes me how people will spend ages on an exercise bike at the gym and pay fifty quid a month for the privilege.

I do a fair bit, mostly open water stuff. Done a few tris and its not my best discipline (running is) but I quite enjoy it and love the freedom of swimming in the sea.
The amount of exercise depends a lot on how good you are. Good swimmers are very efficient, bad ones waste a lot of energy.

but its certainly a calorie burning activity, putting your whole body under stresses that can increase muscular development and effeiceny of some organs. providing your not p*ssing about doing the doggy paddle for hours on end.
its a quality sport imo
