Dibs: Chicago winter tradition
So when you have spent an hour digging out your parking space in front of your house in the Chicago snow you then call "Dibs" by leaving something in the space!

Can't see that working over here!

All depends on wether you have reserved parking on the street. Some places do have that, or at least you have a permit allowing you to park on that street, but I do not think it's as specific as "outside property numbered X".
In places where there is no reserved parking, much like the UK, I can see the objects being slung onto the pile of snow as someone takes the spot. Depending on where you are, you could possibly end up getting a little bit stabbed or shot, all depends on the attitude of the natives of the area.
Thankfully here we only have to shovel the walkway in front of the house (funny how if you want to do anything to the walkway, you cannot, as it's city property, but when it snows, oh, it's down to your the homeowner to make sure it's cleared of snow by at least 12 hours after the last significant snowfall) and not the road, but if we did I could understand how miffed you'd be if some **** (probably in a BMW) decided to just park in this nice clean spot while they run off to Starbucks for their very needed coffee.

Respect in this country, you're having a laugh.
I have never seen the "No Parking" bay outside Tesco near to where I work with anything other than cars abandoned at an angle while they grab some cash/**** and even weekly shopping, too many pi55 taking ******* in this country. Which usualy means the local hospice bus has to double park.
