Drop the 30 to 20 and enforce it!
I agree with suggestions that 20 is plenty .... around schools and around town streets.
I also agree that 70 should be 85 on motorways and dual carraigeways.
With strict enforcement - big fines and a high increase in insurance costs for those who will not adjust to the new brave world we are in.
Kill your speed - Not a child ....

Speed limit should be 50mph minimum at all times.
Kids shouldn't be in the road just like I don't drive on the pavement.
If kids want to be the road, they should pay road tax, as should cyclists, horses etc.

Indeed , except i hear an interview from a guy whos bro died in a hit and run by a guy doing 40 in a 30.
The problem with that is the person doesnt give a toss if its a 20 or a 30 , he was just doing whatever speed he fancied. They never caught the guy either. I just hate the fact that its the" innocent" that get punished , and when i say "innocent " i mean the people that are a few over the limit.
Edit - you are correct with the kids on the road. They need to be taught that the road is a dangerous place. Yes , if u hit a child at 20 instead of 30 , they might survive , but if they werent in the road at the time they would definately survive ! Kids round my way actually jump out in front of traffic like they have the right , and their parents dont seem to mind. My daughters generation seemed to be the last to be taught the dangers of the road.

As road tax is now an emissions based tax and has been for some time now, bikes and the like would be free anyway

The biggest factor is "an increase in child injuries/fatalities", which needs to be sorted.
For years we have been driving around at 30mph in towns and down streets, around schools there should be a limit but it should be flexible depending when school is in or out, say from 8am to 5pm, after that it resorts back being a 30 limit.
What is not discussed is that children NEED to be taught how to use the roads, they run out for no reason from between parked cars, sorry to say but at 20mph they will still die.
Its all about education, one that Pete should be well up on because it was the late 70's to early 80's when the cuts were made and the likes of teaching children to ride their bikes safely on the roads and how to cross safely went out of the window with that government that was in at the time.
If you are not going to educate the kids then there is no point dropping the speed limit.

Bringing back the Tufty Club and the Cycling Proficiency Test would make much more of a difference.

Just rev your engine & blow your horn.It makes them jump & they don't look cool anymore.
Also say to them 'you might think your hard but your not as hard as my car.'

The thing that worries me most about the dropping from 30 to 20 apart from we all know some council will just drop all roads that are now to to 20 mph as just a way to increase revenue. (Road that where previously 40 or 50 mph roads). IS that in few years time when they find out that 20 mph does not work then it will be dropped to 10 mph.
The only way forward I can see would be variable speed limits - time dependant but with a much greater emphasis placed on educating children and adults that the road is not a place to play.
Oh and have to agree with above with silly people thinking they are harder than cars, your not !

I also agree with the point about the behaviour of pedestrians these days. They seem to have no road sense whatsoever. It used to be taught at schools and children used to be pretty safe near traffic-not any more though! Pedestrians just walk in the road instead of on the pavement, even on very narrow roads and I so often see them step into the road without looking and with their backs to the traffic! As someone said, they seem to deliberately try to obstruct the traffic.
If you do clip anyone accidentally because of their dangerous behaviour,I can assure you that the car driver will get the summons come what may!
It is well past time for a change of thinking in this respect by the authorities.

Birmingham are really pushing this 20mph malarkey accross evry road in the borough...
Think Sheffield are trying hard too - Police say its totally unenforceable with current reductions in budgets & police.
