I bought a Skoda vRS new in 2005.....7.5 years and 80k miles so far.....
No major problems....just a front and rear bulb, a bonnet catch replacement and leaking rear door seals...and lost less than 8K in depreciation from new....
One of the best cars I've ever owned in terms of value, cost to run and no hassle to own

I had a seat Toledo 1.9Tdi (VAG group )
50+ mpg,, mechanicaly sound, bit tin worm claimed it in the end
in terms of MOT's it was normal consumable's
No huge surprises
if i gould get one again, id deffo have one
