Default Police Commissioners

Went to vote at 08:15 and I was the fifth person to vote , looks like the turnout will be abysmal.

I'm not surprised.
I don't even know who ours are? Yes I know we received the postal vote forms but I have no idea who stands for what and how they intended to run things.

Because of the incredible lack of effort from these people, I couldn't give a stuff.

I can't imagine it will be a great turn out.

I'd expect police staff and anyone connected to vote, and those who think it will make a difference, but I imagine those who have been on the wrong side of the law won't vote, nor will anyone who thinks they've been hard done by, in one way or another.

Here in Notts, we have four candidates, only one of which actually has experience of the job the police actually do, two are ex-councillors with no police experience and the fourth is expected to get the non-white vote.

I sent my postal vote off a coupleof days ago. We have about 10 people standing down here. None of them have had any sort of campain, I had to look themup on the internet.

Our candidates range from people whose party disagree with the post (and they dont state any different), to ex-police officers, to psychologists, to nobody's......

I'm predicting a less than 10% turnout

Its for an issue that 95% of the public haven't asked for, have no real interest in, and the way the ballot has been organised it's as if they have made every effort to dis-incentivise the voter....

I mean telling people that they have to look online for their candidates? Apart from instantly alienating anyone non PC literate, asking the public to consciously take time out to search for information, in a vote they are not even particularly interested in

I have not had any info about who is in the running in my area.Keep looking for a copper to ask who they want but do you think I have seen one in the last month!!?

I think it would have been better to let the police vote for their own commissioner.
They know the job & what needs to be done to make it better.
We will just get yet another bunch of clueless politico **** ends in charge.

I have had no information of any kind about any of the candidates,I don't even know their names. They just have not bothered to inform the voters about what they stand for or how they propose to do the job.

I asked the local council about it and they said they knew no more than I do and that it was scandalous.

In this case, I am unable to vote for any of them even though I have always regarded voting as a civic duty. How can I possibly vote for one over the others when I know nothing about any of them?

I cannot see how one person can begin to cope with the job envisaged. Stupid concept IMO.

Just let the cops get on with it but perhaps appoint a paperwork Czar to cut the endless form filling. dl

We got a short description through the door, but it consisted of their names plus background (I'm glad you've been a councillor for 10 years, married with 2 kids, but what do you actually plan to do in the post).

I don't like the fact that all the political parties have a candidate. I'm not sure I want the PCC to be a political post.

I think the turn out will be low unfortunately. Really poorly done, should have been rolled into the same date as the local council elections or possibly used a new voting method to encourage people (phone, email, online, text, etc). Yes I'm aware of possible rigging issues, but if you weigh up the low turn out against these issues how is that any better?

care level is somewhere around sub basement 3 ish,,,,,,

as folks above said, info has been **** poor, how a person who has never been on patrol in there life (not all candidate are ex police i might add) could run a police force i don't know.

Also its all a political stunt, they wont go after the crimes that real affect people, police chase speeders, they just give you a crime number if you get burgled.

Yet another Conservative ploy to let people dip their fingers into the local taxation.

Who asked for this? Who wanted it? Who needs it?

But there's money for this, if not for schools, the health service, local services etc.

Probably the only reason I'll vote, to try and stop fat John getting in.

If he does, watch the South Bank become the poor relation AGAIN

He should be put out to pasture.

The only reason I know anything about this vote is because Radio Humberside have insisted on running various items on it and I've caught the odd 2-3 minute bit on Look North. I can only conclude that if I wasn't sad enough to listen to Andy Comfort in a morning, nor watch Peter whats his face on an evening, I wouldn't know this election was even taking place.

Turnout wise, I expect we'll see single figures in some areas, which says more than any tick in a box ever could.

I voted for the 2 names that were not party related (indipendants.)
Oh and so far 17:40 only 70 people had voted at my area.

What I find ironic is that the Tories frequently criticise Union ballots because they only have (say) a 40% turnout. But this will happen even if turnout is 5%.

It won't take long to count the vote then...

Kind of hoping the Green party gets in where we are. They are wanting to dramatically redice the number of police cars and put us all back out on bikes

Going to be good responding to a violent domestic on bikes, with an equipment box strapped to it, and first aid kit, and door enforcer, and all my paperwork etc etc

It's a stupid idea dreamed up by an idiot that knows nothing about policing.

Police and Crime Commissioners will be held accountable by a Police and Crime Panel.
The Panel will be made up of elected councillors and independent members; in fact it’s almost identical to the current Authority.

They will be able to veto most of the Commissioner’s decisions and can request wider public debate on certain issues.

Result – another mouth to feed and the pointless politicalisation of the police!

It works well in the US though. I understand why they think it should be a good idea, not happy with the policing? Great, get rid of the person in charge and ask someone esle to do it properly. Remember old Sheriff Joe in the US? Elected time and time again for putting prisoners in tents, bringing back chain gangs and making them all wear pink. That I could vote for. However, as usual here, it's been done in a stupid manner.

At what % does voter turnout mean the entire process becomes void? surely if 0.01% of the electorate voted it should be regarded as in-quorate?

I'd say that anything less than 30% or so of the electorate voting then the result shouldn't stand.

Just came back from voting

They had a 8% turnout where I live which is double what they were expecting
But I live in a good area ,full of retired people who see it as a day out to vote

I would imagine that's probably the highest turnout for Cumbria where I live

There was only one sensible candidate on our lot
One guy wanted to do it part time
Another one managed a museum
Another one was just far to Pc

My vote went to the hardcore guy who had been a magistrate for years and understood what the job was all about

15% turnout here in the south west. There's more about the poor turnout on the news after the event than the candidates before the election! It's a joke.
