Mostly young women, and in traffic queues it seems almost mandatory

Bang on.
I was sat at red lights on my way to work and the young lady in the car next to mine was texting away occasionally looking up to check on the traffic lights.
I can count at least half a dozen phone users on my way to work everyday, and I only travel three miles to work!

Nik.

If you are caught using a mobile in your car you should have your phone confiscated.
It'll soon stop the habit.

Sadly it won't, phones and sim cards are so cheap these days

Only way is for them to crash and die like the guy 20 yards from our house a couple of christmas's back. went straight under a wagon, broke both arms, legs, his pelvis and many ribs, died 5 days later on new years eve

All because he was texting

It's rife in the US apparently, far bigger problem over there than actually talking on the phone and driving. Over 5,500 fatalities a year as a result

I ride a motorbike to work, being that bit higher gives you a fascinating view into most cars as you pass them, you'd be amazed how many people I see texting, facebooking, or even playing games behind the wheel
And it's not just at lights either, any little bit of straight will do

I'd say it's roughly 4:1 women to men, it seems phones have overtaken make-up as the #1 priority for girls whilst driving

Mythbusters did an episode on it, and they only concentrated on phone calls

Her last call was from a new mobile phone... Can you see the motorcycle?

Now can you see it?

The Honda rider was traveling at approximately 85 mph.

The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The rider's reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident.

The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them.
The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department..

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Save a life. Stop talking on mobile phones and Texting while trying to drive.
The life you save may be your own..... Or mine...

so , will that go on record as a death from speeding , or using a mobile. Im not taking anything away from the dangers of both , just hate how stats are made.

No it won't as the vw pulled out onto oncoming traffic, wouldnt make any difference if the bike was doing 200mph it would have still been the vw's fault

I would also say that this accident was probably not down to the fact she was on her phone, almost the exact same thing happend to a friend of mine long before mobile phones even existed when he was working as a taxi driver

Katie Price drove past me earlier in the year in her ridiculous pink range rover. She was texting!

Felt like taking a pic and selling it to the sun or something

Mythbusters didn't do any tests on the distractive potential of trying to fill in a crossword or play a game of chess while driving either, does that mean either of those wouldn't seriously compromise your ability to see where you're going or control your vehicle?

Anyhow, here's some actual figures, but bear in mind the total number of texts sent in the US was more than 100 times greater at the end of that 6 year period than at the start of it, so the annual accident rate now is probably going to be far higher than a straight 16000/6 average would suggest.

TBH I don't see much of it go on around here. But it must do a bit. People shouldn't do, but they do, and they should get done for it. Simplez.

I never do it. I don't know why people bother with FB and forums via their phones, anyway. May be they can't afford laptops, or they are obsessed with online communications. Or, they are just very modern.

I don't mind occasional browsing on phone when it is needed e.g. it really helped my son today when he was looking for a restaurant's telephone number to book tonight for a meal with his GF. Anyhow, we don't p!ss about on our mobiles while driving. That's just stupid.

Texting whilst driving is just insane imo, okay driving whilst talking may be dangerous but at least you have your eyes on the road.
