...yesterday* I spun my Turbo 2000 Impreza and argued for 20-odd pages as to why

* I dropped the ball and forgot to post this thread yesterday

Why the sudden "surge" of interest on your part?

The sad thing is the forum spent 20 pages trying to convince a 24 year old that he was a terrible driver that was about to kill himself.

Instead, I with they had been telling me to enjoy being in my 20's because they'll be gone before I know it!

Nooooooooooooo!

Devil, I found it but it's kind of in bits. It starts about 1/3rd of the way through which is kind of boring. Something must have gone wrong in the archiving process.

I remember it well Kenny

It's coming up on 10 years since I wrote my Turbo 2000 off. A few more grey hairs, a little longer in the tooth and a little less heavy with the right foot these days

I can kind of remember that thread, I Wonder if some of what I read, re-enforced the things of why I always fill a car up when its hits the 1/4 tank left mark or not !

The scariest bit for me is I'm 10 years down the line and I still own a 4wd Subaru with around 230bhp, guess something's only change slightly

Lol, I got sucked in and skimmed the thread to see the names. Wow, that was a trip down memory lane!

I didn't read the thread but my eye picked up some key words and the jist came flooding back. I suppose I should state how I feel about things with the benefit of 10-years of hindsight and maturity (if you can call it that ).

Thankfully, the FS event remains the most serious off <touch wood> in my driving history. There was no consequence that day and I've had a few prangs - <sub £2k damage - since, but the potential consequences that day don't bare thinking about.

I've made plenty of errors on the road since that were entirely my fault. Some I've got away with, others led to the light damage referred to above. However, I still protest my innocence regarding the events of FS day. The car was settled/balanced and it all went pear-shaped out of nowhere; to this day I have never experienced anything like it.

One thing that has changed over the years is my prejudice towards young drivers. I've seen so many young un's doing stupid/dangerous things that it's almost impossible to avoid taring them all with the same brush. Just the other week, my 19-year old cousin was telling me about mates of his with broken pelvises, arms, legs, noses, etc because a young driver got dared to turn his lights off on a country road for 10-seconds

Never shy of arguing the merits of a point, I battled hard in that thread to prove that I wasn't just another young idiot. With maturity I have realised that was a fruitless exercise.

For me, the big driving change in the last 10-years is the level of fear I have. I wan't fearless back then (a good thing) but my attitude to risk was wholly different to what it is now. So it is true, you do mellow with age and for that reason I am a safer driver now most of the time. However, it is also the case that I envy the skill I had in my early 20's. I had far greater car control skills then and a keener judgement. I seldom drive fast these days but when I do, I'm more hamfisted and less confident. This leads to errors that I simply wouldn't have made 10 years ago.

To be honest, I guess this is true of many facets of life. I couldn't begin to imagine how wildly out of control I would be if a stepped onto a dance floor or went snowboarding these days.

I had 'fuel surge' happen at Combe in a modified classic RA. Quarter tank of fuel - it was the strangest thing.

My STI-5 was arguably worse than the UK turbo referred to in the thread. I probably should have just MTFU and bought a swirl pot
