Default which to look at.. Radar Detectors?

Had my Origin B2 now since 2004.. November the yearly subscription is due... (£50)
But the screen on the B2 acts up and sometimes goes pixelated, goes all black, or fades very pale. It also seems to be effected by the heat of the cars inside.

So, me thinking its time to change it.

I know Origin have sold out to RoadAngel within the last few weeks but know want to know what's as good as the B2 on the market now.... TBH the PoGo Alert+ @£250 is twice the price of the RoadAngel.

What are my option that's out there??

I liked the fact the B2 could just display the digital SPEED of the car, then kicked in what an warning was needed.. then go back to the digital speedo.
Being dash mounted it was easy to read as the speedo, seeing my car's speedo is smaller and not as easy to read.

give me some recommendations.. and ones that work

I'd question the value of any of them. I rarely see Police cars out and about even less with lazer guns. I'd say you are very unlucky to get zapped and a ticket too.

In saying that my sat nav (TomTom) only cost £100 and spots all the fixed cameras. It also gives my GPS speed + tells me the speed limit of the road I'm on!

PoGo Alert+,Road angel and other are GPS based Radar/Speed detectors for which I wouldn't spend any money,if you have already Garmin/TomTom or other GPS for which you can download POI with latest camera database

If you want best Radar Detector would have look for Valentine v2,but still think best is your Garmin or TomTom an POI Radar database, which will cost you less than any above mentioned radar detectors

Don't need another satnav in the car as it already has one built in.

The detectors that have the LIVE update look good.

I have discovered over the years that my car's own speedometer does the job really well at no extra cost!

I've just bought a 'do-it-all' Snooper 3Zero.

Detects virtually everything:-

ALL static sites (via GPS)
mobile GATSO
laser
lidar
radar X-, K-, Ka- and Ku-bands
Etc...

Snooper 3ZERO GPS & Radar/Laser detector

Three different tariff options for the database updates.

Will a radar detector help you there though? They can ping you from a few miles away can't they? Waste of money imho.

Something that would work (seen it on here years ago) is a lightweight front plate fixed to a hinge so that it swings backwards when the car gets up some speed (reg nr can't be seen on the photo that they take of you) then swings back down when you stop

I would agree that as far as the GPS ones go you might as well not bother and use your SatNav for that as well. I had a GPS one some time back because my van speedo packed up (some fault in ecu) and it was forever going off for possible mobile traps and generally speaking you can see the yellow fixed ones if you bother looking.
The only true laser protection device is a jammer which get you in bother if you get caught, as by the time a radar/laser detector has alerted you to a true laser check on/or near your vehicle you may well be too late to do anything. They are most useful in that they tell you which yellow (or grey motorway gantry) rear facing cameras are active. As far as I am aware no active detectors will pick up the Truvelo forward facing cameras or the average speed cameras as they don't use radar/laser.

I did not claim that and my old school mate and I used to get done for that on our 'bikes so often that we reckoned the bench outside Kingston Magistrates Court had our names on it. Luckily they did not have points then!

I use a combination of watching for speedtraps of one kind and another as well as my speedo to try to avoid that kind of trouble these days.

I find it easier these days just not to speed, call it old age, call it what ever you want etc

Apparently 80% or so of speed cameras are still film based

I agree with all that. Less hassle and you don't save any significant time either. I find I can stand driving at the speed limits, especially with the high volume od traffic now.

Its surprising how much fuel it saves too.

Possibly, if its good. Just in case I got caught out.

I did have an old Snooper but it never seemed to be necessary so I did not bother to install it in my replacement car.,

I've ran a Road Angel Gem for a little while now and well worth the money. Laser detector, mobile sites, live updates from all other gem users via mobile technology etc. Much better than my TomTom (they ran side by side for a while) and more accurate in GPS/database terms. Worth a look.
