Thumbs down Atempted break in.

Just had a police officer asking if I had seen anything today as someone tried to break into my neighbours house from the rear garden.

We are all detached and I've always worried about the wall at the back but the officer said the gate was left open so it looks like they came from the front.

I'm so glad I paid for fences on both sides because if they failed to get into next door then no doubt they would have tried mine. (never had fences before as the neighbours didn't mind walking between each others,)

Fortunatly Vic was home from work and we have 2 dogs but do dogs that are super quiet unless they hear another dog but do dogs put burglars off?

I'm just about to go out and by another lock for our back gate as tbh anyone can reach over and unlock our gate - as RAC man did when Lucy got out.

Am I allowed to put broken glass / razor wire along my back wall?

Don't think you are allowed to put this on your wall, but I did, then smeared dog crap on it, that should cause a nice infection for any thieving scumbag that cuts itself

I think you can put razor wire up but you have to have a sign warning people and I think it has to be on your side not 100%

the other thing to put on top of the wall would be grease sticky as hell and just a general pain in the **** when your hands are covered in it

you could booby trap the 1st 3-4 yards of the inside of your walls/fence so when they jump over they.................

-land on spikes and broken glass

-land in a pit infested with snakes

-land on a giant spring that shoots them back over the wall

-land in a pond full of pirahna's

-land in the middle of your baseball game so you can clobber them with your baseball stick

-land in a load of bear traps that you foolishly left around

-land on giant sheets of fly paper.................dont know why but it will give you enough time to come up with a nice surprise for them

-land on a giant button that when pressed unleashes a gorilla/bear/shark/crocdile/ etc etc from a special holding cell where you have been teasing it for months with its favorite food

You can put razor wire etc up, but as above you need signs, and even then if someone injures themself you are liable. B&Q do a product called pric-a-grip which you screw/glue in, it's made up of plastic spikes that are blunt, but if you put your weight onto it they dig in to your hand, stops people climbing. Otherwise anti climb paint is good, though you need signs for that as well

Why do u have to put a sign up telling yourself what you already know ? I understand it in places of business , but in your own garden ? What if you put screws up through the top of the fence ? You could just say a bit off wood fell off.

It comes under the occupiers liability act, it's to prevent people getting injured on your propery. Plus it's a known fact that signage does help act as a deterrent, if someone sees a sign up it will make them think twice, regardless as to whether you have what you say in place

Yes we do but lets be honest, you hear a house alarm and think nothing of it. Well I don't but most do. Same with car alarms.

The neighbour has the same box as us with the same flashing lights. Weather it works or not is another thing.

Funny enough I did have the back wall covered in those cat spikes because we had a rabbit and the neighbours cat took an interest. Stupidly I used the wrong selant / glue and after a few months they came off. Being lazy I was waiting to picvk the old glue off and reapply.

Just put loads on the top of the gate though

I need Vic to drink more wine as I only have 2 bottles to break..
Think I'm gonna do the glass and human dog poo... Watching people take a dump on my wall will be funny

Neh, there wasn't really an attempted burglary, it was just an excuse for Faye's dad to pop round and see who's been stalking his daughter.

The do stop cats but if someone is wearing gloves I do wonder if they could press on them for a few seconds.

My neighbour gave me a weird look when she heard a load of smashing... Glass is up. I'll deal with the fuzz if I have too

I think anything above 2m, you can put anything up, broken glass, razor wire etc.

Might be worth checking with your local crime prevention office, but i'm sure its 2m

What boils my pi55 as much as these scum is the law that we can't do stuff to prevent them coming in. I mean come on! No razor wire without a sign! Being held liable if a burglar hurts themselves when breaking in? arrgghh! If someone wants to break in they should be fair game IMO.

Drove though an industrial estate and metal spikes along Hombase fence , maybe more than 2m high , but beside it a place with a chainlink fence with 3 lines of barbed wire , along top. Neither have signs of any sort ?

Except that normally you aren't allowed to put up a fence more than 2m high between domestic properties without planning permission? And the law for razor wire is (or at least, used to be) different than other barbed wire: razor wire used to only be possible with a council licence. We certainly had to get council permission for the razor wire at my last job, and they were at the time part of the Home Office.

Used to have a house that backed on to an unlit lane. I had a small fence at the bottom of the garden that had six feet of dense brambles behind it. Natures barbed wire
