XH558! Nice to to see her flying again, but a shame shes had her reins pulled in. Now being flown like a gentleman drives a nice classic.
She came in low and played peekaboo!
And when I say low, I mean it!
And did a couple of laps of honour, will try and get them editing tomorrow, she was about a mile away so edits will be a little tricky.
Then left right over my head, barely 200 feet above me!

There wasn't really much point in putting any camouflage on the underside of Vulcans, they were so loud I'm pretty sure Moscow could hear them taking off
You'd have to ask the Americans how effective the paint on the top was, as I'm sure Les could tell you, not one F15 pilot ever got a fix on a Vulcan at Red Flag events

XH558 was a 27 Sqn MRR machine (hence the lack of TFR nose pimple) and then a K2 tanker, finished in the standard '70s scheme of med sea grey, dark green camo with light aircraft grey undersides. When selected to be the display jet she received a one off (inaccurate) all over camo of gloss dark green and light aircraft grey for ease of maintainence. I think she was painted at Kinloss, I would have much preferred a repaint of the original scheme. So as you watch '558 thundering around next year ( hopefully -as we did '83-'92), I'm afraid you're looking at a non representative RAF Vulcan!

It is a shame that they are so restricted by the CAA in what they are allowed to do on a display now. I would find it very frustrating to fly her now at a display. Nevertheless if a ride was offered to me I would be leaving black lines down the road on the way to doing it.
CPD is absolutely right about the camouflage etc. I did both the Red Flag exercises. They had F15's on cap at medium level while we ran into our targets at low level and they never intercepted us unless at night we got bored and fired off an IRD decoy which was very bright. When they locked their radar onto us we just jammed it anyway . They were also trying to get a hit on us with surface to air missile radar but never succeeded with that either.
I got into a dog fight with an F15 while he was trying to get a front gun shot on me and I got on his tail instead and was able to call "splash" on him which meant if I had a gun I could have shot him down. He never heard the end of that from his squadron mates! We kidded them that the refuelling probe on the Vulcan was a big cannon and they believed us! We could turn tighter than an F15 at high level! We got bought a few beers on that.
It certainly gave us a lot of confidence in our aircraft if we ever actually had to go to war. It is an outstanding aircraft in just about every respect.

The Americans at one time proposed to build a super Vulcan copy which would go faster etc. because they were so impressed with it. They changed their minds for some reason. The nearest machine they had to it was the Space Shuttle. That lands in just the same fashion.
We have not got anything with the same strike power and range any more. It did not half impress the Argentinians in that respect!
It will be a sad day when 558 comes to the end of its time.
