Default HMRC Tax.

Can anyone help me with this one,

I'm self employed and have been for a few years now. I've been paying my yearly tax with no issues up till now. I'm no whizz when it comes to tax so maybe someone can confirm or denie this.

This year I paid my tax on the 31st of January for last year. Then I paid half of next years tax. Do I now have to pay the outstanding amount for next years or is that paid in with the return for next January?

I've basically got a statement in the post today saying I owe x amount by the end of July for the rest of the tax owed?

Help please!

It's basically the same figure I've already paid ie, half of next years tax. It says 2nd payment for tax year 11/12.

I was sent a bill for Class II NICs, but have never been asked to pay any sort if tax in advance.

It's your payment on account for next year.

Pay it, or get a fine plus interest.

11/12 is last year, we are now in 12/13 tax year unless I am mistaken?

I have never known you having to pay tax in advance

How can you be fined for not paying something you don't actually owe yet, or may not owe ?

It's normal. You can defer it due to hardship.
