Ryanair + Hertz = con

Ryanair + Hertz = con
We just had a week in Spain and booked the car hire through Ryanair, was happy at £75+fuel+indemnity but what we didn't count on was something called LOCATION SURCHARGE.
Basically, Hertz are charged an amount from either Ryanair or the airport for having their business in the airport. I call that rent! Seems this is passed on to the customer at 40eur.
The other thing I didn't know but do now is you pay upfront for a full tank of fuel and even if you only use 1/4 tank, you still get charged for the full tank. Hertz said this is only when booking through Ryanair and not if you book direct with them.
So the cost of car hire including all the hidden charges, pretty much doubles.
Will defo look into this more next time. I heard you can buy your indemnity cover in the UK beforehand and I'll probably use someone outside of the airport and avoid the location surcharge.

I have used Avis and found them to be reasonably competitive. Their prices do not vary depending on location.
An advantage is that the partner car hire desk will have a massive queue after the flight lands whereas the others are pretty vacant, easing the process.
The 'return with a full tank' requirement seems to be universal now. Last year we managed 50 miles with the needle not moving off the full mark on the gauge. Check this out at the start of your rental period so you know what you can get away with at the end

Flown with Ryan air probably over 50 times and never an issue, great value.
I have however vowed never to use Hertz (not through Ryanair I must add) again, twice got stung with hidden fees and dodgy extras.

The fuel thing is a choice.... you either pay up front for a tank (and you can return it empty) or instead don't pay but then return the car full (being charged for refuelling if its not full) - this is reasonable as at the end of my holiday I don't want to fill a hire car up so am happy to pay for the tank of fuel.

Again - location... I fly in and out of Malaga a lot and I'm happy to use their on airport hire car providers rather than the off airport lot. When I start my holidays I don't want to be arsing around waiting for a bus to run me to an off airport hire car place and then have to queue with everyone else on the bus to fill in the paper work for my car..... I want to rock up at the airport sign some stuff, walk 50 yards to the car park... chuck my stuff in the back and head start for Marbella - hassle is not what holidays are about and for a few extra quid you have a better time

Never had problems with Ryanair TBH, however I wouldn't book car hire through them, I tend to use http://www.all-inclusive-car-hire.com/ which is carjet, always been cheap.
You do generally pay for a tank upfront with most hire companies if hiring for a week or more, less its usually return full.
