All depends how many dvds you have. I have 400+ and my blu ray player upscales them...ok so not HD quality but definately an improvement. The main reason I bought it tbh was, I bought a sound bar and my old dvd player didn`t have any HDMI inputs or outputs
If you`re upgrading from the stoneage anyway then for the price, you might as well go bluray and get the upscaling than spend money on a normal dvd player. Just my opinion
Oh, just noticed you have a dvd player.

Most of the movies I watch are rented, and I can get Blu-ray discs for the same £2 each as DVDs from Easy Cinema - so it's a no-brainer in my case. Nothing else comes close in price, picture or sound quality.

My LG 3dtv has a built in media player. If yours has a USB port I'd be surprised if yours doesn't either.
I bought a 32gb USB drive, I download 3d/HDTV and transfer to the USB stick
Plug into the tv and play

Iv read thro the gentlemans post several times and still don't get it.
This plasma ( VT30 ) has USB HDD record , meaning you can record programmes off tv which you can only then view on the same tv.
Is this what he's saying ? ..

Personally to put a Blu-Ray in the machine and watch my movie at 1080p resolution with DTS-HD sound, no risk of stuttering, lost connections, wi-fi drop outs when the wife does her hot chocolate in the microwave, is infinitely preferable.
The technology is so cheap now I think it will be about for a few years to come yet and even if it doesn't so what, you've spent a few £100 on something that you'll probably upgrade in 5-6 years time whether it has become obsolete and replaced with some streaming box, or you fancy a new one.
I havve a Panny 3d Plasma as well as one of their 3d Blu-Ray all in one systems, while I appreciate the true AV buffs on here will turn their noses up as it's not a seperates system, I think it is excellent and the speakers etc. fit really well with my living space.
In short - go for it

Blurays picture quality is fantastic as is the sound quality. Dont forget the sound quality accounts for 50% of the picture quality. With Bluray you will get HD DTS, Dolby TrueHD, Master HD audio, PCM and Dolby Digital. If you have the opportunity to own a 5.1 (or even 7.1) setup a Bluray will sound amazing. Try playing the movie HEAT or Transformers in Bluray.
I guess now that you have a HD TV why not feed a HD source into it, Sky HD, PS3 or Bluray player (also a source for playing blurays).
Personally I'd love watch 3D movies and sports but I dont have a 3D TV as yet so make do with Sky HD and PS3 with 5.1 audio which I'm happy with.
An answer to your question, yes you should bother with a bluray player. They are inexpensive and will compliment your tv

looks like i should ge one , thanks for input
i gather the ps3 cant produce the full effect sound , something to do with the firmware??? - otherwise this would be tempting ( for 150 quid )
we certainly dont get fibre optic here ,OR good freeview TOMORROW we should be able to recieve about a third of wahts available 10 miles the other side of south downs. I suppose i could put up a dish , but draw the line at getting sky

PS3 can do 5.1 sound through the optical out or 7.1 through HDMI. Makes an excellent all round cheap option as it's 3D capable and you can have things such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc... on there. Plus you can play games such as GT5 Web browser is rubbish on it though.

Exatcly what Saint AAi said. PS3 can decode all audio formats through HDMI or optical. I use mine over optical because of how my set up is configured therefore outputting DD 5.1. but if you use HDMI you can output all HD audio found on Bluray. To get the best surround sound effect its best to run into an surround sound amplifer which can do all decoding for you. Hope this helps. The thing with AV there are so many combinations so its down to preference and money.

I have a blu ray player and I currently have a total of 1 blu ray films. I've had a few and sold them on eBay after watching. I've pretty much lost interest in blu ray to be honest.
I still watch some DVDs when I see them cheap in the supermarket otherwise I watch films through my virgin tv box on demand or downloaded through "other means".
I don't see blu ray being the death of the DVD at all like was claimed when it first arrived.

i actually got a bit addicted to buying Blurays , then caught myself on and sold most on Ebay. Now i only buy the ones that i definatly know i will watch again. Have SkyHD+ , so if there is and HD films on i just record them and keep them on the hard-drive. And i bought my laptop on the strenght of it having a Bluray Drive , and literally have never watched a film on it .
Your definatly correct about DVD surviving , sure look at the "tripple play" films they are selling. If they wanted rid of the DVD they wouldnt bother. Also take a look around you on holidays , at the amount of kids watching portable DVD players. No-one is going to go out and pay hundreds for a portable player and kids Blurays and take it on holiday. DVD aint going anywhere soon. Digital will take over before Bluray ever will anyway.
And dont get me started on HDTVs. When i got my 1st one , what anyone failed to tell me was FULL HD , would come out straight after i bought an HD Ready TV. And now i have a FULL HD TV , there is this 4k HD i have heard about. I have a feeling 3DHD TVs are just a money making stop-gap before it hits the shelves so i refuse to get one.

4k HD is for big screens at sporting events, concerts etc, and cinema for now.
Don't expect any affordable consumer stuff for at least 5-10 years.

...unless you're watching a picture on a 500" screen from 6ft your eyes won't be able to perceive the difference between regular HD and 4k HD. The pixels are so small on a full HD screen anyway that you'd have to be sitting uncomfortably close to a big panel to notice...
The perceived screen size is the same as sitting in the centre seats of a mutiplex! i.e. the screen fills one's natural side-to-side field of view.
Upscaled 576 to 720p DVD **** is awesome (yet to view native 720p Blu-ray **** on it though lol). I love it!
Obviously Sky HD movies/live events, etc. blows ones socks off, etc.
