Unlocking an iphone 3gs??
Mods, please don't move this to Computer, as it won't be seen
Basically, my Son had his HTC stolen last week, and as luck would have it, my pal has just upgraded her iphone.
She is willing to sell her 3gs to my Son, and he only has a year left on his contact so is chuffed to take on the iphone until he can upgrade to another HTC.
Anyway, she was with 02, we are with Vodafone. Any ideas how to unlock so he can use with Vodafone, please. Thanks

Yep, nice and easy. you actually ring up o2 and they will unlock it for free. They get in touch with Apple and Apple will then unlock the phone within a couple of days once everything is deemed legit (i.e. phone not stolen etc.). You then plug the phone into iTunes and it will say it's unlocked and free to use another sim card.
I did the above when selling my 3GS recently but the opposite way round (I was on Vodafone, buyer was on o2).
The only way o2 would charge you would be £15 if the phone was PAYG and not a contract
HTH.

Wrong, you can unlock at any time if you're pay monthly. http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=Companion,question=ref(User):str (Mobile),CASE=17424

You might not have, that doesn't mean to say the £15 wasn't in place previously
Lee you may not even have to bother with a phone call, you can do it online:

Mine took a day or two to come through so the 10 days is worst case.

I did I for them as I was the original contract owner. You just need to do the usual security checks when ringing (Vodafone at least) your provider. I literally waited 48 hours and plugged my phone into iTunes. It said it was done and I got in touch with the chap who'd bought it to come pick it up

What a bloody palaver
Vodafone wanted me to speak to O2. O2 wanted to speak to the original owner. She spoke to them, they wanted £15. Then saying it will take up to 10 days. No way!!!!!
I am going to recommend he goes to the little Foreign gent who has a stall in the local shopping centre, unless someone can come up with anything else.

The bloke on the market won't do it and if he does it'll be a bodge baseband unlock which will give problems.
It's only £15 take it out the woman's cut for the phone

Thanks everyone I am taking him to the O2 store this afternnon.
They said if he puts a free sim in for payg and puts £15 on it, they will complete a form which will unlock it. It could take half a day or 10. At least I will know it's done properly

Well, once unlocked it will be on contract with Vodafone, so whoever get's in next, should have an easier time of it.

No, i've been on o2 contract for years since the 3g came out, trust you to think you can tell me I must be on a different provider. It was £15 to unlock whilst in contract previously and that was on the o2 website and the person I spoke to at the time from o2. So you must have done your unlocks out of contract or since they dropped the charge.

No, trust you to think you know better than the O2 website and various users on this board. You were ripped off and if I were you I'd be on the phone to O2 and thanking me for pointing it out.

If I was you I'd stay quiet. I am right or I wouldn't bother. If you like I'll provide you a link to an archive of the O2 web site going back as far as you like.

You can say what you like, I know what I saw on the website at the time and what I was told by an o2 advisor when I checked it so go shove your instructions on staying quiet up your backside as that is quite clearly where your head is.
Lee has her answer so i'm not interested in any more of your cr4p

Job done
O2 shop did what they said. He has to leave the O2 sim in, which cost £15. They completed the unlock form in the shop and took his email address. He must not use the phone as they will take the £15 from that. Oh and he can use the texts if he wants as he got 500 free Could take up to 14 days but they said usually 24 hours. He then just puts the Vodafone sim in, once advised the phone is ublocked and Bobs yer Uncle.
Thanks again, everyone

Don't upgrade the IOS to 5.1 or 5.11.
I did with mine and the minute I did the only way to get a wi-fi signal is to sit the damn thing on top of the router.
Daughters Gen1 iTouch, no problem..
Eldest daughters Gen 3 iTouch, no problem.
Wife's 3Gs, no problem.
Poor show Apple.
