Devastated
Lost my Mexico today to fire. I am in bits. Nothing I could do but sit there and watch it go up. Just managed to get out in time which scares me silly.

Very sorry to read this. Was only just watching your vid where you were getting it fired up the other day. Stunning car and irreplaceable no doubt, but at least you got out of it unscathed. Once you get yourself sorted out, you'll get another car you like. Chin up.

I had an under bonnet fire in a Mk2 Mexico I had about 20 years ago , luckily I managed to put it out with some help from a house I stopped outside bringing buckets of water , it ended up being the fuel inlet pipe coming off the carb , it was a brass pipe pressed into the alloy body of the carb that came out , was very lucky to still have it !
Gutting to see this , I love the Mk2 Mexico's

Bollocks It looked and ran sweet in that video
Fuel leak? Or brake fluid on the manifold? Electrics?
I know its probably a not a good time to bring it up, but I've have had big issues getting decent quality fuel hose in the UK that is suitable for modern petrol (i.e 5% ethanol as now required by law). The modern stuff just falls apart, even the steel braided stuff. As soon as the fuel stands for any period, the ethanol seperates and permeates into the hose.
If it was SAE J30 R6 hose, then I'm pretty certain that will have been the problem I'm afraid (or soon would have been). FFS it even perished and cracked on the lawn mower! Quite a few kit car and classic car restorers have run into the same issues.

If it went up that quick sounds like a fuel hose came off some place and squirted fuel all over the place, just a guess though.

I had a fire start like that in my car and I nearly shat myself as the flames were coming out the wings similar to your first picture but luckily someone came running out a pub with a full extinguisher which I emptied thru the intercooler. Still a fortune worth of damage but I still have the car.
