Same about According To Pete and Synchronised. Was almost like synchronised knew what was coming when he threw AP off before the race and did a runner! Poor bugger!
Someone put £50,000 on synchronised
You'd think with horses like Synchronised (that have made a fortune) the owners would fight tooth and nail to have them operated on and retired. You always get the presenter saying the kindest thing is to put them down but it just seems a shocker when you think what these beasts have served up for their owners/trainers over the years.

In most cases a fracture to the leg on a horse results in it being destroyed. That's if it is a £500 pony or a £1m racehorse. How the horse got its fracture is a different argument. They wouldn't just destroy it because it has 'served' its purpose! The horse would still be worth a lot of money.

I would have thought there must some stud value in the horse even if it's racing days are over.
Or do they remove the goods before they dispose of the horse?
Nik.

I've had this conversation with a vet friend of mine in the past, because it's always seemed a bit harsh to me too
Apparently because of the weight and time involved, it's practically impossible to fix and set a broken leg on large animals, they also destroy cattle with similar injuries

Is it right to run these animals in a dangerous race?
I'm not sure I'm against horse racing as a whole, although it wouldnt bother me if it didnt exist and i don't think they should be whipped to go faster but...
Should the Grand National be made safer, to the point that horses aren't put at risk from stupidly high fences and long distances?

I don't want to see the races banned but otoh watching the National on HD widescreen TV is not for the faint hearted. The falls look bone crunching and you could see an least one animal on TV that injured itself and they put a black screen up around the injured jockey. It wasn't so graphic years ago on a crapy cathode ray TV.

It is a great race and a British tradition of course.
Apart from that I think that the jumps should be made safer, I feel it is unfair to risk the horses lives as happens at the moment.
It would still be just as great a race with 30 jumps for the horses to cope with, but a lot less upsetting to see the fallers being put down. It was terrible to see that one jump being bypassed second time around with the black shielding having been erected.
I make no excuses for being an animal lover.

So should rugby and rallying be banned because actual people sometimes get hurt or killed, not just horses. The owners do risk analysis, and the benefits must outweigh the costs, otherwise no horses would compete.
