Taxing parking spaces at work ..
This is not a good sign: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/city-taxes-...143415174.html
It was thrown about a few years ago that a named space was a taxable benefit, but this is something entirely different with companies being automatically taxed based on the number of spaces.

The plan is nothing new for Nottingham. We've had demonstrations for over it and there's a lot of companies stating they would move to Derby to avoid the tax.
One company actually wanted to pass on 50% of the tax to it's employees, however, that idea went quiet once the tv cameras turned up.

If you park in a public P&D car park, but your employer buys you an annual pass, is that a taxable benefit?
Why is it any different to him providing you with a computer that you need to do your job?
What if you visit one of these companies, do you have to chip in to their parking costs?

This note describes the Workplace Parking Levy (WPL), a policy introduced by the Labour Government that enables local authorities to charge businesses for every employee who parks in the area. It outlines the policy of successive governments and provides information on the only scheme currently in place, in Nottingham.
Under the Transport Act 2000 local traffic authorities in England and Wales, outside London, may introduce a WPL to help tackle congestion in towns and cities. This far, Nottingham is the only local authority area to have sought and obtained approval for a scheme, which will begin on 1 April 2012. That may change as local authorities seek new streams of revenue to compensate for reductions in central government grants.

And they are charging VAT on it!! VAT is levied on goods and services when sold to other businesses and non-business customers. How does providing parking spaces for employees make it VAT chargable? VAT on another Tax, that is a new one!!

I'm very very disappointed in Boots having no teeth to stand up to Nottingham council. They've rolled over and are passing the costs onto staff

Personally I'd have presented the council with a proposal to relocate all of Boot away from Nottingham and give Nottingham 7500 extra unemployed. The council would have listened then!

They could even catch the train out of the city to Beeston station, although I suspect the price of public transport would cost more than the levy. There is a very nice pub next to the station, selling good food and great real ale (The Railway).
As an aside, I never use public transport in Nottingham. If I'm going in to the city centre on my own, I'm generally there for less than an hour. 1 hours car parking = £2.50. Return journey on Nottingham City Transport = £3.60. I know I use less than £1 worth of fuel to get there and back. If I had more passengers in the car, say 4 of us, that'd be £14.40. So I'm saving £11.90 on the cost of public transport.
Notts city council can go on about investing in the tram, but it doesn't reach Beeston yet. And when it does get there, it won't be going by the gates of Boots anyway.
