Default Has the economy started to turn a corner?

Business confidence is up

Mortgage lending is up

New staff hiring is up

Have we turned a corner or are we still massively dependent on what happens in the rest of Europe?

Yes, we have just turned a left hand corner, just like all the othr corners are left and we will continue to go round and round in circle as we have always done before. HTH's

No need for the sarcasm.

There has been so much doom and gloom for the last 5 years, it is a refreshing change to hear some positive news. Considering the markets just seem to react to what ever is reported in the news anyway, may be, just may be, 2012 will be a good year.

Mortgage lending is up which is good seeing our economy is based on the older generation selling houses to the younger generation at ever increasing prices. All we need now is to knock those interest rates down to 0% and everything will be fine

I think the markets have already effectively written off greece already so there is little more damage that can be done by greece defaulting.
Spain and or portugal on the other hand !!!!!!!.

Back in blighty however we are just starting to negotiate uplifts in leases for some of our larger tennants.
We also have very few voids and our private rentals are VERY healthy

We are not doing as well as the USA where thay have had a good dose of Keynesian economics.........The austerity here in the UK hasn't made me go out and spend on goods / services that will keep UK PLC afloat.

I work for a small (15 staff) IT / Telecommunications company. On the IT side, we can't get kit out the door fast enough at present. Some of it is end of tax year related but I've got customers queued up for new servers.

The majority of our customers are SME sized (wide variety of sectors) and quite a few I've spoken to seem to have confidence in spending money on upgrading and improving infrastructure.

No it's OK, unemployment still rising, French Connection the latest retailer in trouble... normal service has been resumed and the Tory plan to shatter the economy completely after NL wounded it almost fatally is on track

At least some companies are bucking the tread and actually creating jobs.
French Connection is a company that offers over-priced luxery clothing, so no wonder they are struggling.

Game/Gamestation are also in trouble, but what do you expect when they were selling MW3 for £45 whereas Tescos had it on sale for £25. If was head of helm at Game, I would have got rid of the highstreet stores years ago and concentrated on becoming an online only company to get there costs down. That was the only way for them to compete with Tescos/Asda etc.

Unemployment always seems to take longer to recover than the recovery itself (if that makes sense)

Er but Tesco and Asda and their ilk are one of the problems. They are putting just about every type of shop out of business and when they have their monopoly what do you think will happen?

It is just slewed in the cycle i.e a recessions starts but hiring doesn't stop immediately and when redundancies come they come well after the start of the cycle. Equally the economy starts to pick up and companies wait to see if the recovery is real before they start hiring again and hence the unemployment figure don't start to decrease for a while after the economy picks up.

That being said I still think we are flatlining right now!

And our council has just announced that they are increasing car parking charges again. £3.90 for an afternoon visiting a town centre full of empty shops. Sheer ******* genius
Once game goes the only excuse I will have to go into town will to be accosted by the mobile phone salesmen, personal injury parasites and charity muggers that line the streets.

Genius move isn't it? LOL! Heard some council dimwit on the radio a few months ago suggesting that the government should make it law for out of town shopping centres to charge for parking so the town and city centres are on a level playing field.

Even leaving aside the obvious stupidity of what he said the idiot didn't even realise that the city centres are not just competing with places like The Trafford Centre but also the supermarkets and the Internet.... how narrow minded can these people be?

Or is he proposing an online parking charge too - you visited the Amazon site for 1.5 hours that will be £5.90 please
