Best off going to a local bike shop as they can size up the correct size frame for you, you can then take it for a test ride to see if it suits you. If you are not actually going 'off road' riding with it, you may be better off with a hybrid bike - lighter frame, slightly larger wheels with slick type tyres, they roll so much easier with less effort.

Sounds like you don't need a mountain bike to me. Hybrid would be better. A specialised Sirrus may just fall into your budget for an entry level version.

That Sirus looks OK - pretty much a 29er rigid, but ever so slightly less cool

For the Sirrus go to www.evanscycles.com and search on there, it starts at £370.
I would do a link but posting from my mobile.

As for colours it's not really a good idea to buy a bike based on colour, just as you wouldn't buy a car as you like the colour, unless you are female maybe

I have a bike which is mainly white with black on it and it looks permanently dirty, not looked clean since the day I took it from the store.

I've got one of these - very pleased with it, and it's white:

Whatever you get make sure it is set up for you and comfortable, I have now got a 1500 quid bike that I don't like and a carbon racing bike I picked up today that I am pretty sure I am not going to like, all the best components and brand names in the world will not make you comfortable if the geometry does not work for you.

You're quite tall for a bird.

Frame aren't in inches any more BTW.

Frame size is a very personal thing.. At 6`1", you could be best suited to a variety of sizes.. You are best off going to a decent bike shop and test riding a few to get a feel for what suits your build..

As said above, for £300 you are probably looking at a hybrid rather than an MTB..
