It's incredibly difficult to unravel and it seems close to impossible to have a firm view. I understand Putin's position and Iran's and Assad's, I see the Arab League's dilemma, I understand the 'rebels' (or insurgents or terrorists) position and I get the sectarian issue. Ethically one ought to support the 'oppressed' in their struggle, but there's the strong possibility that they may become oppressors, and a worse kind. The local Christians have an awful lesser-of-two-evils dilemma that seems to point towards supporting Assad and I guess that leaves the British interest which has to take in to account Russia, the potential war with Iran, the flow of oil, Islamic sectarianism, a commitment to aggressive liberalism and so forth. We can throw Al-Qeada and Israel in the mix, too.

Syria is far worse than Libya yet no one is interested as there are no oil fields to fight over. That's all it boils down to.
How the hell that idiot got to be in charge though i've no idea, he looks like a weasel and has a pathetically squeaky voice. Must be up there for one of the wimpiest looking/sounding leaders on the planet. He is quite clearly cuckoo and needs removing ASAP but with no oil no one outside will interfere.

Syria does have a pretty sizeable oil field producing over 400,000 barrels of oil per day. The thing with Syria is that they also have a sizeable and well trained military power with advanced weaponry supplied by Russia. I don't think Syria can be treated like Iraq or Lybia since they are also backed by Russia. An "invasion" is not an option as the outcome is likely to be far worse.

A drop in the ocean compared to Libya and Iraq though. If the Russians want to carry on supporting Assad then it's time they had some unfavourable economic sanctions imposed on them until they back down or **** off and live with the economic sanctions. Putin isn't far off being a nutty dictator himself who I can't stand.

Any invasion would be a bloodbath. Assad is just doing what his father did but it's more newsworthy today.
Only hope in the short term is a military coup or a mass military revolt. Either of which could leave an even bigger mess.
It's an appalling situation.

I just don't see how the Assad regime thinks they can get way with this, there are international criminals courts now etc and they won't make an exception for him. I can only think he and his clique are so insular and lacking in reality they see this as the way fwd and have no perception of how the wider international community views them.

I'm not sure it is more newsworthy, just back in the early 80's there was no internet and mobile phones etc so the state could basically lock-down all information going out of the country.

As for the Hague there are plenty of folk, like Mugabe say, who should be there but somehow evade the place - and that chap currently in USA having medical treatment?
I can only think that Assad himself is just delusional and surrounded by an **** licking coterie who tell him he is doing the right thing, and if daddy can do it...... And the more he goes on the deeper hole he digs for himself with no way out.

Homs taking a real battering. Does anyone feel the international community ought to tell Russia and China to do one and step in? They always support the tyrants as we know.

But China today said they support sanctions.
Hopefully the first step to China agreeing other action?
For some reason what's happening in Syria (and the pictures coming from there) upsets me more than Libya, Palestine etc.
