How much to run your home ?
At work we got into a rather heated debate about how much it costs to actually live in your own home per annum...
I made a guestimate of under £3500 and i was laughed out of the place..
My friend, who earns the same as me guessed at nearly £20k,but his mortgage is £1000 a month..
So am i missing out something here ??
Mortgage...
Gas bill
Electric bill
Council tax
Tv Licence
Water rates
Sky
Phone bill
Broadband
Home insurance
Food,drink,cars etc are obviously excluded...

Not cheap to live any more with the first £1000 -£1100 gone on basics before I can save for my retirement and pleasures for life

Mortgage £94 a month
Rates £85 a month
Gas and leccy £85 a month
Sky and TV £50 a month
Insurances £100 a month (cars paid for annually but included with house and life)
Food bill £200 a month
Telephones £30 a month
After School Club and other club things £100 a month
Not sure if these really count as they aren't really household related as such.
Savings £200 a month
Credit Card £400 a month - paying off the kitchen ASAP

Water rates (Scotland, in with CT)
Sky £720
Phone bill £150 (I take it you mean home? as mobile about £1200 for pair of us)
Broadband £180
Home insurance £200
£19840
Even without the big mortgage the essentials are still coming to £4.6k, surely everyone must be around the same for basics? Averageg gas/electric is £1200pa, CT and water rates must be what £1800 average? Sky, broadband, phone, tv license, home insurance must all be roughly similar?
£3.5k????? How is that possible unless you are living mortgage/rent free and paying peanuts on bills
Average surely must be more like £12k? £600-£650pm rent/mortgage?

Low income families living in housing association homes pay £300+pm nevermind private rents/mortgages. Council housing is what? £250-300pm?
I just dont know how you can think £3.5k pa is normal
edit....should have read the without mortgage/rent part, apologies. (This is hardly normal though unless you're an OAP that has paid off his/her mortgage)

Gas Bill £530
Electric £500
Council tax £1200
Water rates £122
TV licence £150
Sky(inc BB+Phone) £600
Home insurance £190
£3292...
I dont see that were overspending or underspending anywhere (water rates are cheap as were not on meter)..
So thats how i worked out what just a normal family would roughly spend in a normal sized house...
Car insurance for 2 cars £800
Fuel £2600 ish
RFT £460
Food and beer £5200ish(inc pets)
Pet insurance £220

Huh?
I was assuming that, like me, those people had been prudent with their money and paid off their mortgage. Did mine in 13 years, don't want another one thank you!
Oh and I left home at 17 thanks
Edit: Ah yes, just remembered that you're the fool that posts the videos of your helmet cam wearing vigilante cyclist mate in order to troll. Forget the question as your answer is, like you, an irrelevance

Why though? There's nothing wrong with having a mortgage and if you are young and want a house you have little choice for the most part. I am middle aged so more likely to have been able to pay off a mortgage than a whippersnapper

I cannot believe how many people paid off their mortgage either, mine is pretty big and I have no intention of paying it off untill I move , hopefully to an even bigger mortgage that I never pay off.
