Default Beer - spoilt for choice?

WARNING -This is an old thread now revived by a bunch of old soaks ::

I happened to be wandering through the booze section at my local Waitrose, as one does, and the choice of bottled beers is startling. I am talking about beers not gay juice lager btw

These are 500 ml bottles and work out at about £2.50 to £3.50 a pint which I guess is reasonable value.

So what do you folks recommend as I can't try them all. I had one of the Badger brews last night which was really nice. Flame away but I do enjoy a bottled London Pride as well.

So suggestions please for a medium strength smooth drink with that moreish appeal.

It did strike me that in my early student drinking days we seemed to be able to afford to go out fairly often and have 4 or 5 pints but I wouldn't even consider that now because of cost.

Cheers, David

Love my ales but certain your local supermarket will stock different brewers' efforts than mine due to geographical issues

Those 500ml bottles are about a pint, or as good as. What you may or may not have realised is that the price of beer has shot up since Christmas, so your average price for a 500ml of Pride (yes, me too ) was £1.74 a bottle or @ 3 for £5 then £1.66 in Tesco/Sainsburys. I went in this weekend and that same bottle is at £1.99 with no bulk discounts.

I used to buy cans of JS (not the smooth) for £3 for 4 and sometimes less. After Xmas last year it went up to £3.97 and has stayed fixed there all year.

Its price fixing I tell you

Go to LIDL if you want some decent bottled ales for a good price. They seem to do most of the Shepard Neme range (Spitfire, Bishops Finger, Master Brew) for around £1.30 a bottle as well as Hobgoblin and usually a few others.

Personally I don't tend to stick to any one variety and if I see something new on the supermarket shelves I'll generally give it a go. I make my own beer too

Used to like Waitrose cider, their vintage stuff and the perry were nice, also partial to the odd bottle of the Normandy cider that they sold. Just don't have a Waitrose nearby now

Not sure about availability but anything by Shepherd Neame, Harveys, Hogs Back, Youngs, Gales or Badger does very nicely. We've got a few micro breweries popping up round our way too now.

Waitrose cheap wines are good too, way better than the competition for only slightly more money.

Should be enough to keep me going - bottoms up as they say

Just bought a brace of Fursty Ferrets (£1.51 at Waitrose) and a large 640 ml bottle of some Chinese beer on offer at £1.27 (I'll get some insurance before opening )

And I agree with comment above about Waitrose wine - they do some very reasonable claret type French reds at £5.00 or less.

Used to have a local pub that did a cracking draft dark mild but haven't seen any of this about for years?

I have just bought 4 bottles of - Birra Peroni, Gran Riverva (6.6%) -- no idea what it is like, but in the interests of 'research' I have just opened a bottle

I suppose everyone has different tastes and it does have a lot more flavour than most beers. Whatever you do don't try Hardcore IPA you will most certainly not like that
