Default TV sizing

At what size do large TVs go up exponentially in price so they become poor value (and double the price they'll be next year), lose quality etc?

At what size do large TVs (instead of a projector) become obscene compared to the size of room it is in?

over 50" starts to increase in price considerably, how obscene it looks depends on the size of room and placement. If you want the tv to be the centre of attention in a room then any size will look ok but if you're missus is likely to go nuts, or you're planning on putting it in the corner of a room then something large, say over 42" will start to look out of place.

I have a 65inch about 17ft from where we sit in the family room and it does not look too big at all. If a 100 inch didn't cost the price of a Ferrari I'd have one of those.

I never quite get this argument that large TVs look obscene or crass. If you find watching TV in general to be obscene/uncultured etc then that's fine don't have one at all, read a book, listen to the radio or play scrabble.

But if you are going to have a TV why on earth have a tiny one? Why watch things minaturised such that you are squinting to see them? Why not see them in a size that is as close to their real size as possible?

TV in my house is rationed so that the children are encouraged to read and develop other interests. However when we all watch a film I want it to be enjoyable so it's on the 65inch plasma TV or a 8ft wide projector screen.

There is a relevant number, I believe - let's call it the UPI (Urban Pikey Index). It is the ratio of room size in square feet divided by the size of the HD screen in inches.

Hence, a 37" telly in a room of 140 square feet, gives a UPI of 140/37 = 3.78.

A 50" telly in a 100 sq. ft. room gives 100/50 = 2. The lower the UPI, the more of a chav the subject is.

I had a 103" Panasonic installed in an Exec Conference Room at work just over three years ago. A snip at Ł38k. Bet they're a bit cheaper now

Ha ha love the UPI.
I think the large ones look obscene if you can clearly see them through windows of houses from the street. Watching Eastenders from the street and clearly seeing Pat Butcher looking twice the size of an Avatar usually means the TV is too big. Also, I hate front rooms with creme leather sofas, huge flat screen and no other furniture.. Souless!

UPI 17.5 reusing existing TV as wife suggests. I think we're reaching a deal where she gets a wood burning stove and I get new a TV. I've encouraged her to be a tough negotiator and now it bites me on the ***

They had one in display on some of the Media Markt stores. It put out so much heat was like walking past a giant radiator. Can't remember the price but it was five figures.

Contrast/brightness was a bit dull by modern standards though.

Are there any ratings with the UPI system ? I'm currently a 4.5, but will buy a bigger telly to fit into my social class if needs be.

Went from a 42" to a 47" its just on the border of being too close from our seating position .. if id have gone 50 or 65, i think the picture would have started to look poor as we were too close

That said bigger is generally better

SD may look poor, so that justifies getting plenty of HD content

I'd wait for the ultra high def panels. Current HD and 3D will be consigned to the bin very soon.

4320P or nothing

It's only too big when you have to keep moving your head from side to side to catch all the action

The first day you install a large screen TV, it will look too big for the room.

The next day, any tv with a decreased size screen would look too small.

i have a 60" kuro plasma and sit 10 feet from it. we've gotten used to it now and i will go to a 65 next time.

we watch a lot of blu ray and downloaded SD TV. for TV, your brain switches off after a while to the lack of quality and you just get into the programme.

remember, further than a certain distance, you cease to be able to see the detail in high definition.

for me, the audio is the bigest factor in immersive home cinema. i would fall asleep in front of a massive tv with only 2 (in built sort of quality) speakers.

btw, my living room is 40 square metres and my tv still looks big in it lol

50 inchers down to Ł550. looking at an LG 3D the other day. was sorely tempted as I have only 1 HDMI input on the back of my current Samsung 50 inch. bought another xbox360 instead.

You only need one HDMI slot, as long as your amp has four or more

Celebrity Big Brother,
Celebrity Coach Trip,
Any other "reality" ****.
Jeremy Kyle and Eastenders.
That's what "we" enjoy watching!

Thankfully she's not a total chav. Desperate Housewives, Sherlock, Midsummer, Above Suspicion, Grand Designs, Restoration Man, Location, any Agatha Christy or similar crime drama, and our mutual collection of action movies.

Means I have to watch MTW, HIGNFY, QI, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Apollo, Top Gear etc at work on a weekend. If I even suggest watching any of them at home she pulls the 'I'll have an early night' trick.

I have just gone from 120" (720p) to 42" (1080p) in my home cinema room.

The projector was great, but the room got really hot, the picture although good was starting to show its age and lack of inputs into my 5 year old projector was starting to cause problems. Also means I can watch TV etc now as well as films.

So far so happy.

Bit controversial, but they are very fugly bits of furniture and I would not have one in my living room – whatever the size

The only one we have is in the children’s playroom, it is a 32”, the room is about 5m by 3.5m and a TV any bigger would start to look silly imo
