£175 for a Goretex coat 8 years ago, a lot of expensive coats dont actually do the job of keeping you dry just read some of the reviews on the web

Musto are very good if you want the real deal in weather protection.

Also HallyHansen for sailing.

For general wear Berghaus are superb.

Goretex jackets may vary in price but good quality jackets cost.

They may look the same but I know from my Berghaus jacket the quality of seaming and taping is excellent, but more importantly the quality of design is just right so it works. Things like cuffs, collar and hood design are very important to keep you warm and dry, or equally cool and ventilated if it is hot.

Never had this goretex stuff , im really a bit skeptical

Last sailing jacket i bought was henri lloyd about '95 maybe , i thought it was pricey enough but i was ripped mercilessly for its 'gossamer thin' qualities by the rest of the crew , who did less sailing and spent twice as much
- it did me ( fasnet and transatlantic)

Blacks are being bought by jd sports so I doubt there will be much of a closing down sale, they are to go into receivership for a minimal ammount of time and then jd sports will buy them, I'm sure there is some legal reasoning behind that.
Anyway I went in there the other day to try and buy a new wind proof north face fleece to replace the one I have and there was no sale at all on north face products and the sale on berghaus was nothing special either

Ok maybe it's just one particular shop. Wife recently came back from a Blacks/Millets shop with 3 ski jackets and 3 pairs of waterproof walking shoes for the kids for £90.

CotswoldOutdoor are having an online sale with some very generous discounts (tries to redeem himself)

Red face

I suppose im just behind the times , this is how much you spend for top mountain stuff
so add another 80 quid making 400 and thats the musto hpx jacket right there - extra to cope with shipping a green one right over you

Thanks for the advice

Went into Cotswolds and wasn't impressed by their sale. They seem to have racks of the same North Face jackets. Smacks of special sales items, rather than 'normal' items being reduced in price.

Dave
I found the same in that store, wasn't impressed either

Regarding the goretex, the stuff is fantastic, although you do pay a premium. This is from a golfers point of view - its very light weight, the most waterproof material I have used in a waterproof suit. Allows free range of movement, and is generally the top of the tree from my own perspective.

Does cost though. 10 years ago I paid near on £300 for a suit, the brand names will mark up more.
