Londons Firework Display..
#7
Just commenting tonight, 10 years ago it was pissheads in the fountains in trafalgar square lol....
When they cottoned onto fireworks, it was usually chopped to get back to some daft luvvy in the studio sucking up to some z list celeb...
At least now theyve cottoned onto the fact that they are actually quite good, and should be shown in there entirerity
Lets hope the ones for 2012 five rings are better

Yes it's new year, we all like to look at something pretty but there are far better things that sort of money could be used for.

Look at the bigger picture. NYE and the fireworks bring in millions of pounds into London, hotels are full, restaraunts and pubs are packed etc, all of which generates a huge sum in VAT, income tax, NI etc.

Yes, very true. And with the Olympic games around the corner I think London needed to show the world that 2012 in the UK will be great!

Was a great display, the H of P looked fantastic against all the fireworks, much of it is competition with other capitals of the world and who can throw the best firework party, top job by London.

Awesome, sod the cost, a doctor got payed 4.5 million for having a bad time at work, this is much better value, not much makes me feel proud for being British but I must admit to a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat watching that.
Definitely better under Boris the fireworks, better than watching Red Ken with a sparkler whilst the money went to his mates in their quangos.

The country is f***ed and we waste 1.8 million on a display no wonder we are in the state we are in and it really only benefits the people in the area as everyone else can only see it on TV, it is just another example of how we waste money when it should be used to get us out the mess we are in and help sort us out...afterall there are homeless on the streets who could be fed & housed, children who are being abused and so on its really annoying.
Oh and happy new year all

As a one off event is it more than that spent on the event?

I doubt if they didn't do it kids would not get abused or social care would improve markedly, 1.8 million is a fair chunk of cash but it isnt much in the scheme of things, paid for by us and I think it is worth the 0.0000000001 p I contributed, better than the £100 I usually spunk on bonfire night, look at what money gets spent on, its loose change in comparison to Wars, Nukes, benefits and just keeping the place going, it kind of feels like the government giving something back after a tough year for a lot of people, a bit of fun.
Just enjoy it for what it is, an amazing spectacle.

I saw that Beijing had a big display but no fireworks - just a light show????
I thought China was the home of fireworks but perhaps city pollution is so bad now.
Anyone know? Ran out of matches?

Well it could be going to pay off some of the national debt that the country has at the moment.
As for the amount raised from visitors, The cost was actually about £ 313,000.00 for the fireworks the remaining costs were for policing, transporte tc
They are normally sponsored
Since London started having fireworks on New Years Eve it has brought millions in extra revenue to London businesses especially the smaller ones such as bars, restaurants, hotels etc over the New Year period
