Nope, illegal to drive without valid tax on display. You could take a chance as its not the crime of the century and if stopped (unlikely) I'm sure the pig would understand, or maybe not depending on which side of the bed he got out of, take your chances or pay the price, the decision is yours

No must be taxed to be on carriageway, I would suggest parking it on a drive somewhere until you can tax it and be legal....although that said the last time I saw a police man was before Xmas and a traffic warden...well.....

Be careful on this one. My sister had a car in the garage waiting for her when she passed her test. Anyway, she passed her test, got the car insured online. We then waited for it to come up as being insured on the insurance data base on askmid. Soon as it showed insured we taxed it online - this was in the evening. Next morning she gets in it to go to college and she gets blocked in by I think it was a VOSA van or could have been a DVLA van with flashing lights etc..... She wasn't to sure as it was her first time driving without anyone else and was already nervous Anyway, it turns out her car had been flagged up due to it being insured without tax - car had only come out of the garage the evening it was taxed online. They had probably been driving past my mums to see if the car was being used for a couple of days. Anyway, my sister showed her the paperwork we had printed off for the online tax and all was fine.
Just be aware - if you insure it without tax and keep it on the road, chances are if they are in your area they may call round

Once you apply online or via the phone the database will be updated, that's why the website only states you get a grace period on displaying your tax and not buying it. Also, the Post Office systems are linked to the DVLA database so big brother will know if you haven't taxed the car - welcome to the 21st century
