What is the deal with the price of extractor hoods
Apparently some stainless attached to a fan and a filter makes an extraction hood 500 quids worth of engineering, a decent looking effort is 1k + ? Is there some kind of secret I am missing becuase it all seems a rip off. I think I could make one myself twice as powerful as any on the market for less than £100.

Does it fit under a unit, or is it a stainless hood?

I have this one in France and it's lovely. http://www.screwfix.com/p/chimney-hood-900mm/94753

Eh? our Rangemaster Hood cost £220 and its a 500m3/hr jobby that run a proper 6" rigid duct I can't shut the kitchen door when its on
Just for info: Any 4" or 100mm ducted or recirculated kitchen extractor is useless by the way. Also avoid fexipipe, unless you like the house stinking of yesterday's fried kippers (too restrictive).
Anyhoo most of the designer hoods are made by the same manufacturers (Italian). Try Elica and Luxair. Alot of their stuff is rebranded, then punch it into google shopping:

The bit you want to watch is "past" the extractor hood. We have what seems to be a stainless hood BUT the amount of cold air that comes back through the opening is stupid! We're in a rented house so not much we can do. If it's your's then find out how it's fitted otherwise you'll not only have cleaning problems you'll have "**** it's cold|" problems i winter!

The wall ours is on has the garage on the other side, it blows straight across the garage ceiling and out the end wall, down a 6" stainless duct that was 'left over' from a site at work
Dave, a backdraft shutter makes all the dfference as far as cold incoming air goes

Yeah, I know about those grills and I may look into one. Even though it's rented I don't mind spending some money to make life more comfortable! Trouble is the vent exit is on the pitched roof (that goes over the kitchen - which is a sort of extension at the back of the ground floor, if you follow) so I'd have to have a good look first.
