Android is more exposed as applications do not have to be vetted. However, saying that there was a proof of concept virus loaded up masking as an application for the iPhone that was allowed into the store for more than 3 months.
The need for AV is coming to a smart phone near you. As always, be careful what you download and install, and consider using AV.

Yes you are. I made my choice and one of the reasons for that choice was security, when you've worked in the industry for 12 years you'll understand.

just be careful and use some common sense.
(and stick to the official stores)
i dont use AV on my phone atm and it is of the droid variety..
saying that it is worrying what could happen if an aggresive bugger gets written and out in the wild

You're a random, anonymous person on a web-forum, who never posts about anything except their passion for one specific brand of computer products, and yet you're surprised anyone might doubt your impartiality on the subject? FFS, wake up and smell the coffee. You've gobbed in the soup, pissed in the well, poisoned every last hope of anyone ever trusting what you say on the subject of computers, except perhaps if it specifically pertains to using an Apple product. Get over it and move on

Nothing James, just let someone use it who told everyone I ilke pissy smelling old men or something similar.
Mark, can you please contribute positively to the thread or find something else to do, insulting me does no one any good. You fell for the hype from more negative members of this board, many do.

I'd say the same about anyone who tried to get their advice accepted as impartial, when every last thing they ever post here is nakedly biased in favour of a particular brand. It's you who's dug your own grave with your incessant hype of that brand, and I don't give two stuffs if you find it 'offensive' that anyone points this out.

Anyhow, as much as I'd like to talk about me all day, we should stick to the subject of the thread.

I run AVG on my HTC Desire, Android. Trust me I would always have antivrius and anti-malware. The costs of some of these virus intrusions can be high plus the data loss.

You've been right that there's no fundamental problem with a person notorious as the most outspokenly biased fanatic of a specific manufacturer of computer products, then claiming to be in a position to offer impartial advice on the subject? I think not, and the very fact you appear incapable of spotting that problem (or at least acknowledging its existence) should make it abundantly clear to anyone with half a brain that they'd do well to stay clear of your advice, on computers or anything else.

Asking Jack on anything Android is a kin to asking a muslim extremist his opinions on christianity, hardly an impartial view, but if you read between the lines he does sometimes make some valid points now and again.
Android is open and therefore more likely to be subjected to malware, but like MS Windows there are plenty of anti-virus products for this platform. iOS is still the most secure mobile OS, however, the complacency of people have with Apple's security in believing that it has no malware could well mean that an infection on their device may well go unchecked for some time. That in my opinion is worse. Who here has an anti-malware product installed on their iPhone/iPad? Not many I would guess.
