Working in Abu Dhabi?
Anyone know what it is like to live and work in Abu Dhabi?
Lock junior has a chance to work as a guitar teacher in a newly established rock school out there but neither of us has a clue about the place. I think it's accommodation and air fares paid and a couple of grand a month.
I guess that it would be fun for a while and then pretty boring but comments invited.
He is not gay and does not take drugs btw.

Got back from there this morning, the Emiratees are a strange bunch to work for, and he will be treated like a second class citizen. He can drink and there's stuff to do for a while. My trips are usually a week or so long and I can imagine a couple of years tops would wear the place out - a colleague has just gone out there for 3-years working with the UAE defence force and despite being there 9-months is still treated with suspicion and not trusted at all.
It is a great opportunity though, just be prepared to be messed around

I worked in Dubai for a year, just down the road from AD - Spent some time in AD
Important stuff is does the placement come with accommodation - this is not cheap and usually involves paying 6+ months up front.
have a look at this if he is keen http://www.amazon.co.uk/Abu-Dhabi-Co.../dp/9948033183 these guides are brilliant.
PM me if you have anything specific.

OK - thanks guys. Some useful comments. We are just putting out feelers at the moment and have no proper idea of suggested terms etc. But his mate has just left to go out there so we should get some thoughts coming in.

I was in Abu in Oct for 3 days as one of our offices relocated there from Dubai. Nice place, lots of Ex-pats. Local "girls" seem to be mainly of Filipino origin and frequent many of the bars. Looking around there were plenty of 50 something Westerners taking advantage... I found the Russians in The Cigar Bar within The Fairmont Hotel, Dubai much more pleasurable on the eye
Anyway back on topic I wouldn't want to work there as the air was full of fine sand which got in my throat.. Take a gas mask or don't go outside for too long and you'll be ok
