Default Struggling on £40,000 a year?

Apparently this is the average wage of a double income household in the UK. Some see it as well off and others see it as a real struggle?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15197860

Average weekly expenditure is around £500 per week.

Selfish cow ... New car every 2yrs! No wonder why their business failed...

Without our loan we could easily live off £40k a year - we have already tightened the belt on everything... With our loan we couldn't...

Sounds like a pretty standard pension off the Civil Service to me.
I'm sure they manage somehow.

How the help do they have a £300k+ mortgage on £40k a year?
My bank might lend £150k, tops on £40k. Even 5 years ago. Today, £120k if you have £30k deposit. Wtf.

It may also be an old mortgage and was self cert.

Mind you a mortgage of that size would eat most of their 40k

Way this country is going I think we have more of those riots to come. Something will happen as cost of living is going up so much. I'm in building trade and struggling like f***.
I spend nearly £90 a wk on fuel just for work which is stupid.even food gone up lots.
Then I get taxed 20% on what I earn grrr

was'nt knocking you mate but as you say it does'nt go along way, after paying off debts (as i know from experience),its sad state of uk that we live in when the only winners are the dole seeking tramps that have 4 kids and no intention of working

Well its complete bollocks and a grand example of why gordon Brown dropped us right in it.

If people had been sensible and realised you should only borrow 3x income we wouldn't have a stupid housing market and the stupid country in a right mess

But no,and look where we are.£40,000 is a bloody good income but it doesn't enable you to deal with the economy we (Gordon)have created

Totally agree mate. My wife lost her job months ago. Went to jobseekers and they basically said pee off. Yet someone she knows who I hate for this reason: single parent, 3 kids, 3 different dads, claims she really really ill, has a really bad back, and registered disabled yet can go gym everyday on the weights, clubbing all the time and running the list goes on. Gets a car, house paid for, council tax paid for and tax credits. Wtf. Pops in now and then but when I get home soon goes as I let rip at her. Money grabbing scum

Get a car that does more mpg....but yes spending 90 a week on fuel and complaining you can't afford a house sounds pretty stupid! Especially when you let 25k slip through your hands.

without being vulgar me and the mrs have a combined wage of 70k and we still just about get by.!! 160k new build house (1st time owners scheme) and the payments are just under 1k/month then there's the bills, food, fuel etc. we don't go out rarely buy clothes, no savings.,, it soon goes.

in my eyes, its gonna be a lot worse in the future for the younger generation in this country ( the sole reason we may not be having kids)
