Default Any plumbers on here for advice ??

Does this sound dear I got an extension on my house so I got a new condensing boiler fitted with 4 rads. They supplied this and the boiler was a worcester bosch greenstar 30si. I previously had a gas boiler so just replaced it with the new one

They then fitted my downstairs toilet and sink. They also fitted my new ensuite toilet, sink and shower and towel radiator (All supplied by myself)

Just got the bill £4150 inc vat. On the whisky now

No that is way to much. Got the whole house done with boiler, radiators piping etc all done for araound £2000. You supplied the parts so it should be cheaper.

Didn't you get a quote before you got the work carried out.

And no I'm not a plumber just a consumer.

Surely you would have got aquote/estimation of the cost before work was carried out?

Question it.

Start by asking for a breakdown of the quote into sections, which bits are for what work.

THAT might show up a few "errors".

But DO keep in mind that plumbers darn sarf are charging £100 an hour.............

Far far far too much chap.
I have a pal who owns a plumbing business, I'll give him a shout and see what he says, but I can tell you straight away your bill is over the top.

From your post it sounds like they supplied the boiler plus rads and fitted the sanitary ware you supplied, on that basis its not awful, get them to provide a breakdown as they have to be able to justify it. Also make sure you get the 7 year warranty if they are approved by Worcester.

They supplied the boiler and 4 radiators. I supplied everything else. The worcester bosh boiler came with a 2 year warranty but i noticed on their website if that particular boiler was bought before dec they would extend the boiler warranty to 5 years parts and labour

If they supplied the lot and work should be around 3500 mark but depends on how much pipe work was involved

I'm with mog on this, its not out of order, but you can ask for a breakdown, and should always get an estimate first. if they have done a good job, and you get the 5 year warranty, you can sleep in warmth and get showered in your en-suite with confidence, and that in my eyes is loads better than paying a bit less and having problems, then not been able to get in touch with the guys who have done a S#*t job

They have done an excellent job no joints under the floors etc and got radiators in my garage to keep the Subaru and mx5 warm in winter.
Just was shocked at the price I thought plumbers / builders were cutting costs etc to get work

The plumber also had to track the entire garage 35ft to fit coils to take the gas from the meter box to the boiler. Maybe this was expensive

Im a gas safe installer.
The price is a bit too expensive, probably by about a grand to 1500... however, im not VAT registered and i will guess that a big chunk of that will be VAT.
The worcester with flue and the correc clock will be around £1100, the rads obviously depend on size. was the bathroom equipment a swap or complete new plumb in?
Labour wise you would be looing at around £300ish a day for anyone any good for the 2 of them.
Like i say, i think its a bit dear. Hope that helps you.

Doesn't sound to bad tbh mate Worcester boilers are the best and 2 blokes for a week could be anywhere between 1500 and 2000 Just labour. if they've done a good job mate then that's it I do a lot of bespoke bathrooms and people pay a premium for top quality work safe in the knowledge nothing's going to leak or break in years to come be thankful you didn't get cowboys for cheap and end up with problems I do more and more repairs from bodgers these days unfortunately still ask for a breakdown of the bill so you can see where the £s have gone

Yes mate £600 was the vat. The bathroom and downstairs toilet were brand new so complete new plumb in.
Thats were the cost must be then must be about £300 a day for the 2 of them. Funny when I asked the guys one day what was the boss up to they said he was on a cruise and it was his 6th hol of the year. I can see now how he can afford it...

Sounds ok to me, you would be shocked at the price of copper tube and fittings then on top of that you have all the plumbing traps etc, as already said you would be paying over £2000 in labour For 2 men for 6 days.

It is always good to get an estimate first, and if possible one that is broken down,
you might still think it is expensive, but you will be able to see where the costs are,

The VAT difference is only on the labour, you would pay VAT on materials whether they are VAT reg or not

Heres the difference The spark was there for 10 days (not full days tho) and fitted 18 spotlights, 6 twin floresents, the thermostat, the digital timeclock, 5 outside lights, 4 smoke alarms, 1 heat sensor, 1 carbon monoxide monitor, shower lights, extractor fan, shaving socket and all the sockets upstairs were crome, all the lights were dimers upstairs, 8 double sockets in garage, socket for roller shutter door and some lights in garden + new consumer unit
Total price for the lot £1600 (including all the stuff)

Far better value than the plumbers

Not easy to make money in any trade these days and the hardest thing to explain to a customer is the cost of materials the trade don't make as much as you probably think. Not saying your spark has cut corners as I can't see the job but if he's used sub standard gear to bring the price down is that really good value ? Not saying he has but just making an example of how the trade and customer look at the price differently anyway I'm just a poor tradesman having a rant lol

Well I'm shocked. My pal who runs his own plumbing business has just got back to me.
He reckons if the job is done well then the price is not over the top whatsoever. He said its not cheap by any means but good workmanship costs that little bit extra.

Hate to say I told you so but now hearing it was 2 men for 6 days I'm thinking it was a bit on the cheap side and I'm being very serious.

Again I'm with Mog,

British Gas,,, only boiler change,
No radiators
No En-suite
Just the WB Boiler change, 3k and then you would of been sold a £25.00 per month maintenance plan on top of that.

British gas are cowboys. I have no idea why people entertain the idea of using them for work other than supplying gas.
I think the only way you'd have had it done at a more competitive rate was look for someone not VAT registered, but either way you pay for good work, you dont want the most expensive or the cheapest.
