Should we get our dog vaccinated?
We just have one dog now, an oldish Spaniel bitch.
We used to get her an annual jab regularly but after speaking to a couple of breeders and a vet we started to give them a miss.
She goes out on walks but only on the lead but does the usual doggie sniffing around. She has the run of a small enclosed garden but this is not invaded by rabid foxes or the like.
So should we resume the jabs, especially bearing in mind her advanced years? She will have been needle free for about 4 years now.
I know he answer I will get if I ask our new vet but, of course, they have a vested interest.
So what do you dog owners reckon?

Ex-cat owner here. The only reason we had ours vaccinated was because they had to go to a cattery when we went away and the cattery insisted on vaccinations being up to date. I see what ADrianF is saying but then your dog could get run over tomorrow and there's no jab against that!

I agree with Dave, our hound only gets her jabs because all the kennels round here insist on it.
Our last dog never had them, because we never need to kennel her, and she lived to nearly 16
Since they've never needed to go away, our cats don't get jabs either. Although if there was one for grumpiness the old cat would be first in the queue

Interesting - cheers. In fact I thought I would get flamed for putting our friend at risk but I think the big danger comes from mixing with other dogs and, of course, especially during a kennel stay.
If and when we have to replace her we would get a puppy done as she would probably go to classes.
Mr Duk, do pm me if you come across a grumpiness jab as my missus would love me to have one

My last dog Sam (R.I.P.), was always quite ill after a jab, so I only went every two years.
For your own sake I'd get another shot, my Mother had a dog catch parvo, not very nice at all, even if you catch it early.

P.S. It's also down to whether the other dogs around you have had the shots too !

I think they changed the guidelines on this a couple of years ago, and now it isn't necessary to have a booster every year. Although as stated above, if they go into kennels, they usually require them every year.

OK - we'll probably get her done provided vet gives reassurance that she is not at any major risk of the jabs themselves harming her, her heart is in poor shape for example.
I did some Parvo research on Google and it can hang around street corners or in gardens so not just passed on by over friendly dogs.
